Hunter Quad Disaster !!!!

Given the predictability of the Quad issues, why don't they always spin D on the weekends? I get that its often empty if the quad is running, but its a pretty good backup option (plus its a great little lift on its own, in my opinion). The only time I was upset on Saturday was when I was stuck in a loooong B line while D was sitting idle. Given the F/D options (not to mention the west side once it opens up), I'm fine with the sketchy quad situation, but the D lift is a key part of the Hunter crowd-avoidance strategy.

that's even more surprising to me.

K spent 6 mill on The Skye Peak Express last year.

Actually, they claimed they spent $5.1M, but even that was a signifigantly inflated number since they didn't replace lift towers from the original quad. That $6m figure reflects all the trail changes that were done, including two major trail cuts/grading plus "the stash".

Highway Star, serious question for you. How often do you dream about Killington?

All they need to do is update the base station, the cable, towers, chairs are all fine, it would also help to build a "real" wind breaker at the top not those stupid boards like everwhere else. I was up there Sunday when the wind was blowing so hard that they had lifties pushing the chairs forword at the top because the chairs kept skipping of the track(?) where they go from the cable to the track.

I heard the electric engine is not strong enough... something about brushes...
And when the wind blows down the quad it creates a strain that makes it switch to diesel... But something about it makes it so it's tough to switch back..

Does that make sense?

I heard also, there are 12 brushes but only nine are good? It's an electric motor, get new brushes or maybe the brush holders are bad? Get a new motor!! They use the diesel just to get the people off (emergency back-up). It takes alot of power to start the lift. I would love to how amps it takes to get the thing turnin'!

If they want to compete...they need to get that thing running. Yes you can still get to the top other ways but weekend crowds are killer. Now if the west side was covered all the time...I wouldn't care. They probably need a new control setup as well as a motor, big bucks as it is all custom made to order. Its a catch 22.....lift continues to break down...people don't come....less revenue. Spend the money....not enough paople come throughout the season.....in the hole you go. I'm wondering how much revenue they got from the new condos...had to make a difference. And now they have to support the people who bought them.

Yeah its a tough position for hunter. The towers themselves might be fine, but Ive noticed many of the concrete bases are showing alot of wear. I imagine the towers would probably need to be reconditioned too. Potentially new hangers too if they are the originals.

Yup. But that would seem odd, if they actually got the new motor last year, that it's already not working correctly.

I'm not skiing Hunter if the Quad isn't running, it isn't worth the 3 hour drive to sit on B>F or D>F, and I'd suspect most others feel the same. Give up a year of snowmaking upgrades and make the Quad work.

Orville is 90+..... The economy sucks...

I hear there's one on order but they can't afford it...

I don't ride it that much so I really don't care all that much.. But it is an issue...

Rational.

Like you said before, it does not really affect me much because I always avoid the quad.

But it does affect those who ski Hunter less often or who go there for a vacation.

It will have to be addressed, but I think the westside lift is higher on the list of priorities right now.

In all fairness, Hunter should be making money. From my understanding both the condos on the lodge, and KMC had sold well? That alone should have given them enough money for a quad IMO. In addition, I'd think business would be at least decent at Hunter lately, with Belleayre seeming to be going downhill at least a bit.

EDIT: Unless they're expanding the West Side, I don't see an urgent need for a West Side lift. Y barely gets any use, and Z, while old and s***y looking, seems to be running fine/relatively reliably. (Plus, Y works fine as a backup if something did break on Z).

I have heard that the state agreed to let those lifts pass inspection this year with the understanding they would be replaced before next season.

I have heard 1 fixed grip quad starting a bit further down than the current Z and ending between Z and Y at the current Z lift elevation.

So I have heard for what it is worth.
