As many of you know, I have a trip up there to smuggs. Ill be there for the first week of November. I realize I will be riding on the first possible week as the last week of october would definately put me out.

I need input and best bets. Im not wanting crap like "youre insane, theres not gonna be any snow". If thats all you have to say, stay outta this topic! Im lookin for tips and the like on what to do, where the most snow will be, where its at, and what to do to get there. Ill probably print this thread when the time for the trip comes, so please, help me out here. Im needin like a guide.

So, how about that snow?

you can count on me too. snow (enough to slide on at least) the first week in november is rare, even in northern vermont. if you are looking to hike for turns, look towards killington which won't yet be open but may likely be blowing snow if it's cold enough. that may or may not be illegal and get you tossed off the mountain, so you didn't hear that from me. other than that, you are better off praying to ullr than asking advice here because no one knows what's going to happen for snow the first week in november. jay has the best chance at hikable options for some snow, but even that is a long shot, especially considering the current weather pattern.

I remember an actual snow-dance I saw on the web. Cant find it but I swear it works. I also found out that if we have snow or cold in the forecast, dont tell anyone, because that makes the snow-god mad and He will take out the snow. Thats the truth. Or maybe just a coinsidence that happens everytime.

Rivercoil- Thanks for that. If I get tossed Ill be sure to refer them to this site and tell them to PM rivercoil . JK. Where does K-mart usually focus blowing snow for the first time?

Woodbury would be a place to watch, keep an eye out on the webcam. Unless you are seriously snow starved (like me) it's really not worth the trip from Vermont. For me it is a 2 1/2 hour car/ferry ride away. I was there for opening day/first tracks on November 9th, 2003.

Belleayre will blow snow ASAP after a cold snap, while Killington now only opens with top to bottom skiing, unless we all riot outside of ASC headquarters for upper mountain skiing first

Okemo may try to open early with upper mountain skiing only, but they are nearly 1,000' lower at the summit than Killington.

Trail list on opening day:
K1 gondola
Glades/North Ridge triple

Essentially, 1 novice way down from the top with laps available on a 600 vertical foot intermediate trail under the upper mountain triple chair.

Unlikely that it will be open before the 2nd week of November but they'll likely blow snow earlier if there's a solid week of cold projected in early November.

Details:
Great Northern from the top.
Rime under the Glades/North Ridge triple.
Great Northern wrap-around from middle of Glades down to Snowdon.
Usually, Middle Chute but sometimes Great Northern wrap-around the Snowdon quad if it's warm/humid weather
Lower Bunny Buster.

Usually, the rollout sequence after that is:
Upper East Fall & Reason (formerly East Glade)
Middle Bunny Buster
Upper Bunny Buster, the poma, and the Snowdon triple

I think it was 1997(?), I was working at the Bush, we got about 30" of the white stuff, got 60 trails open, around the 10th of November.

Had about a week of great skiing then the rain came and by Thanksgiving day we were totally shut down. So you never know. :D

Hit or miss at best. I wasn't trying to burst your bubble in the other thread...which I think led to this one  But honestly, it is a crap shoot.

Here is the recent snow history in early season that I can remember being up in Northern VT:

  • November 1995: was snowshoeing on Thanksgiving
November 1996: Same and skiing at Burke.
November 1997: Tough start to season.
November 1998: Honestly can't remember...thinking snow was late.

    November 1999: Warm, late start.
November 2000: Good early start, big thaw in Dec, then never stopped snowing until like May.
November 2001: BAD start. NO water or snow.
November 2002: GREAT skiing at Jay (open) on November 9th. Best so far. We skied more in Nov than in April. Lots opened.
November 2003: Good early start, then warmed up around Christmas.
November 2004: No snow at all...early snows in Oct/Nov, but they did not stick around.
    November 2005: ??????

So if there is a pattern, let me know...

Killington opened with the Header trail on Rams Head in October of 1997, I skied there on October 26-27th.
