The Winter Olympics (94) - if it weren't for that, I'd never be interested in skiing

College. Thanks to the first year phys ed requirement. Notinterested in team sports, so I said, hey, let's try something new. $30 for 6 lessons, plus $30 for 6 rentals. Beginning of the end.

My parents never did anything outside in the snowbelt except shovel snow. They had no interest in snow sports, but they did like to take us sledding and watch us crash and burn.

Lots of parental assistance in here!

I first skied with a childhood friend...antique gear in a neighbor's yard. Once. Spark but no ignition/

My mother asked me once (I was about 13, 6'4" and awkward) if I wanted to try it...I said "no thanks"

One of my sergeants in Italy asked me to give it a shot. I was 22. I loved it. Jimmy Durrschmidt, this is all your fault!

I owe it to my husband. He and his friend John taught me to ski when we were dating.
I'll never get the instruction out of my head.

"Its just like two tracking. You turn to slow, don't slow to turn. Keep up, we're not waiting for you at the lift!"

Its amazing I survived, but here I am, with more passion for skiing that anyone could have imagined.

My parents got me hooked. We have a house on the backside of Belleayre. We used to go up every friday night and ski sat and sun. Every weekend. We also used to go to Plattekill and Bobcat. When my sister and i got older and my parents stopped skiing, we still would go up there. My father used to put a piece of paper in our jacket pockets with our names and in case of emergency phone numbers <lol> and drop us off at Bell and be back at 4 to pick us up. Now, i have gotten my kids as excited to see snow as i am.

I never lived around the Mts. as a youth. An Army buddy from N.Y. asked me to go night skiing while stationed in Alaska. From the moment I put those Skis (Olin Mark 3) on I knew this would be a sport I would always do. 35 years later, I log +70 days a year. Thanks Dennis K. where ever you are.

Ditto for me. When I moved to the Berkshires from Ohio at the beginning of 9th grade, a neighbor took me to a local hill. It didn't really click for me then. Went a few more times in High school, but still didn't get the bug. Wasn't until after I started working after college that I met some co-workers/friends that were into skiing. We use to go up to Vermont on the weekends and ski and party in a group. I finally got it. Can't get rid of it now.

I owe my downhill skiing to the weather. I was a senior in high school and a cross country skier. I signed up for the annual high school ski trip with several friends who also cross counrtry skied. Most people were going to downhill ski and me and my friends would go to the cross country center. 1980 was a terrible year and there was no natural snow at all . We got to t he mountain in a rain/ice storm and the only option was downhill skiing on just a couple of runs. So what the hell I gave it a try. I had a such blast, I bought downhill skis and boots the next week!

The same thing happened to me with fencing. The ex-gf started, I watched, then started, and got more into it than she ever was. She hasn't fenced since she graduated college ('03) and I'm still at it.

my Dad.... I wish he could still ski... :(

My Dad hasn't skied in 9.5 years and his last day was at Whistler in January of 1999...He was never that into it and enjoyed it more for the scenery than for speed or air..I remember him cursing me when I took him down Double Diamond at Okemo and Middle Earth at Sugarbush..he didn't like bumps. He also didn't like booting up at the car..and also didn't like driving to the ski area in snow pants..He always booted up in the lodge and got a locker...which is for un GSS-like as I tend to want to maximize vert..oh well when he visited me in Montana..he met me at Bridger Bowl after I skied a halfday and he considered renting skis..but his one hip is pretty bad. I'm definitely a bit envious when I go on ski trips and see multiple generations of a family skiing together..

I never had skiers in the family. But It's cool to see famlies skiing. There is a Club at our hill called The Over the Hill Gang. Must be over 70 to be a member. They usually ski Wed. so I'll lurk and ski with them. The stories those guys have.

My parents rented a house by Bromley for a week in the late '70s and got skiing lessons for my brother, my sister and I so we skied the whole week. My parents took lessons too and my mom really liked it, I just found out recently that she used to ski alone a lot locally when we (her kids) were in school. I don't know why they took us to Bromley because they had never skied before either but I'm glad they did. Thank you Mom & Dad.
