I always look for the faceted layer... What you described - warm day - big temp swing is classic for setting up a big faceted layer...
Cold moisture trying to rise up to the top layer passing through and adding to the weak layer..

Probably could've been detected easily with just a pole plant into the snow. unless the snow was too goopy then you'd have to to a RBlock...

I just don't understand why birds would stop chirping before a human-triggered avalanche, unless they get together and say, "Shhh... watch this doofus huck himself off this cornice." Maybe it's different in different places, but I've never heard of that phenomenon before. I've never heard it mentioned in avy-safety seminars either.
