So, I just called Waterville Valley to see what was going on for this Saturdays' opening day and was told by the first person I spoke to:

"uuummmm...well.. there really isn't much snow, so I am not sure about conditions for Saturday"

Then the second person I spoke to said:

"We are definately opening Saturday. Only the top will probably open and with only one trail or so"

So...I cancelled our hotel reservation and we might just head up Saturday morning to at least get our season pass pictures taken, etc. I am considering bringing the gear just in case we decide to make a few turns...

Also Loonmtn.com's web cam shows nuthin but green :(

Devo in years past it has taken 2 to 3 nights to make enought snow to open up top.
Round the clock it won't take long. The quad will bring you to the double. About a 10 sec run, but its skiing. I may go Sunday cause its easy. I need to stop at ski fanatics to get some boot work done.
I have a buddy at Loon they were ready to make snow at Halloween, but have been holding off. Looks like this weekend non stop into Thanksgiving anyway. I'll be at Loon the Wed pre Thanks giving. You will enjoy the pass. Parker motel in just past Loon exit33 is nice reasonably priced place to stay if your trying to keep cost down.

Sound public relations. "There isn't much snow."

Actually, yeah I'd call that sound public relations 'cause I'd rather they be honest insted of telling me to truck the whole family up there 'cause "it's gonna be GREAT!!" when in fact there is really only going to be one trail open. At least now I can make a more informed decision.

That's where our reservations were for! We have never stayed there, so it's an ok place?

Time for a short story.
Decent size rooms with a fridge. They have a indoor hot top. Small style motel. The people were awesome.
Before we bought up north I took my daughter for her 4th birthday just her and I for a couple of days of skiing.
We left a huge stuffed elmo in the room. Proof some Dads just need a bit of extra help.
Anyway they called me said they had mailed it to me... thought my daughter would miss it. I did not know it was even misssing. They asked nicely could I pay the 3.50 in postage. My daughter was very happy.

Yes, I prefer to hear the truth no matter how much it hurts. This is why I have a beef with some places near Waterville who simply sugarcoat it too much (not to kick a dead horse again). Tell it how it is...

Bob, that speaks alot for the place that they would automatically mail it back to you. Alot of places would just put it in lost and found or something...

Yes, they'll have the top open (probably just one or two trails) this weekend and they'll get the Northside trails open by Thanskgiving weekend. Typically, they won't be top to bottom until the first weekend in December. They will have more beginner/intermediate terrain by the second weekend in December because that's when ski school starts in earnest.

I probably won't make it this weekend, but I'll be up there for Thanksgiving weekend; look for a guy in a bright red jacket with an iPod Helmet (don't worry, I don't crank it so much that I can't hear) and Bright Orange Fischer RX-8s
