What they could have done was make everyone pay $25 and all of it is going to charity.

they definitely should have advertised that ikon passes will not be accepted.

No one is perfect,โ€ฆ I give them a ton of credit for pulling it off. When I looked last Tuesday, I thought ZERO percent chance they will open again.
Everyone?

Why should a Beast 365 passholder have to pay $25 for June 1?

They should call it a Beast 364 pass if they're going to charge $25 for the last day of the season.

a $25 ticket that went to charity is kind of a petty thing to complain about IMHO. Honestly Iโ€™d be pissed with Alterra as well, but youโ€™re seeing that they donโ€™t give a shit.

I donโ€™t mind paying $25 for charity, but I am pissed that I saved one of my 7 IKON days for yesterday and couldnโ€™t use it. If I had known in advance I could have have used that day mid-winter when they were 100% open.

If u were there early and waited an hour on line to get to the scanner and be told you now have to go to k1, get a ticket and get back on line, I think they have a legitimate gripe.
I was there 2 hours early and had this happen !! I would have blown a gasket if they ran out of Tshirts in the meantime.

Well it is leap year...

I seem to recall Ikon passes saying they expire on May 31 in past years. At the time I did wonder how that would work with Killington and others staying open into June/July.

Thatโ€™s definitely what happened - the passes were scanning as expired. But if they expire on May 31, then at the very least next years pass should start on June 1 and be should have scanned as valid if you have already renewed. My renewal is paid in full but my pass was still scanning as expired. IKON even have a promotional page bragging about โ€œall year accessโ€ FFS

24 hours later...

They should've opened today also. ๐Ÿ˜† Two years ago by the end of the last day they were still spinning the chair with it looking pretty much like this. Pretty amazing how they had a pretty damn decent base yesterday most of the way.

I see when they updated the closing dates on the Ikon website they already had Killing closed. That was on the 29th. Sloppy sloppy!

I don't think it is that simple. I think there was likely a miscommunication between Alterra and Killington. I think Alterra shut it off as they thought based on something K told them that this was considered a special event and were under the impression everyone needed a ticket. The Ikon pass was valid June 1 previous years...so I think there's shared blame here. As someone else said, K should have just given out vouchers and sorted it out with Alterra later on.
I knew that there would be at least one Alterra defender. And it's a usual suspect. I would not defend them.

The Email that Zand posted was B.S. Alterra deemed that the season had ended for Killington. The response to Zand confirms it and is unapologetic. The comment about the $25 pass was a lame excuse. Killington's marketing did not say that everyone needed a ticket. Whoever it was at IKON Central just used that as a "hindsight is 20/20" excuse. They pushed the blame but could not even be bothered to at least apologize.

The real message is that Alterra got everyone's money, in this case almost a year ago, and it was time to shut off the pass so that they did not have to send $75 or so to their competitor POWDR for a $25 ski day. Any valued IKONers who had issues yesterday get an automated "bot" response with absolutely no apology. But hey, "Cheers to the Good Stuff!" so you all should feel better! :ROFLMAO:

Take it up with Alterra. Spoiler alert: don't expect an apology, let alone any help.

This. Again, Alterra holds the keys to the IKON pass and turned them off. It sucks for those that got stiffed and I would certainly be pissed.

Your hatred of Alterra really clouds your judgement sometimes...

I didn't outright defend Alterra. This very much seems likely to be miscommunication between both parties. Ikon's closing date page on their website was last updated on May 29th. As of that date they listed K as closed. K didn't actually announce they were opening for sure on June 1st until May 30th. I know you'll think this is impossible, but perhaps K did not clearly communicate to Alterra that they were reopening and honoring 23/24 passes. You said you didn't see in the marketing announcement that everyone needed a ticket, yet a couple pages back on this thread drjeff said that was actually his interpretation of the announcement (fwiw, I agree with you that I would not have interpreted that announcement to imply everyone had to buy a ticket. I'm merely using his post to illustrate that not everyone thought it was clear and it is plausible that others interpreted that way).

So I emailed Killington with a forwarding of what Ikon said to me and then basically said that I'm not looking for a refund, it went to charity and I wouldn't want or expect them to give that money back, but it would be nice to get an explanation from their end of what happened and that I thought it would've been the right thing for the ticket scanners to just let the Ikon passes board the lift.

I'm interested to hear what they have to say.

More than the iKon snafu itself, my biggest issue is sending people who waited in line for an hour back to the K1 to buy a ticket. They should have at least let those folks ride the lift one time and then go to the lodge to buy the pass to ski more. If some of those folks decided after one run it wasn't worth the $25 to ski the product some more, so be it.

That would have been the proper way to handle this situation from a customer service perspective on what was largely a novelty skiing day.

Personally I'd reply to Alterra as well and point out that "everyone" did not have to buy the $25 ticket and that other passes were valid.

I would but they clearly don't give a shit. I feel like it will be more likely to get a clearer explanation from the mountain. Killington has generally been pretty honest about most things and generally cares about their reputation so we will see.

I don't quite think they "clearly don't give a shit". That e-mail you received was from a level 1 customer service rep at a large corporation. Someone at that level has no clue of the full details. However when pushed with an example that their answer was wrong, they should at least escalate it internally.

FWIW...don't necessarily expect a better answer from K either. Apparently here's the response they sent someone else that I saw on social media and they're also now claiming it was a "promotional day".
