Disclaimer: I am not encouraging Snowman - actually if he was banned from AZ I would not be shedding tears.

I know very little about snowmaking (certainly not as much as Snowman) other than it needs to be freezing temps and low humidity. But I gotta say that I was really surprised to see all this snow making at so many resorts. It does seem really early, especially with projected opening dates still ~ two weeks away. I fear the snow they have blown will be melted within a week, but I sure hope I am completely wrong.

I posted about this, but it went away. snowman

. BW tested its guns on 10-17 yesterday they went at it.

A few other places got going yesterday. Its a gamble. Would not be the 1st time the snow melted. New owners and alot more competition. There a temps to gamble with. Matt noyes is a good source. www.mattnoyes.net
I agree with some of your points, Just keep it civil if you can't you should leave. I hope you stay, but if the tone is the same you should go

The only thing I know or care about is the fact that I'm ready, Got my Killington pass last week, and today, took down the gazebo and tuned the skis:

First, picked two pairs of skis for myself and two for Vee:

Throw them on the tuning bench:

Tough part here, choosing the right wax, went with the ch10

The Bush continues snowmaking tonight. Laying a good base on as much terrain as possible before opening is the goal per Win's post over at skimrv.com. Most other resorts are doing the same. Some melt-off is expected but there is enough cold temps to put the pedal to the metal when you can.

Sugarloaf = photo op
Mt. Snow = half photo op, half actual base building
Attitash, K-mart, Bretton Woods, and Sugarbush = base building.

Snowman may be a jerk, but he is right about about Sugarloaf.

That won't last more than 2 days. You can see how shallow the snowpack is from the long distance picture, too. Also, add that the fact that they turned the guns off and used low-E guns, and I think it is quite obvious that snowman is actually right.

According to a source I know, they have about 2 feet on upper T2 and have snow all the way to the base. They also blew snow across upper sunday punch to get to the midstation. It sounds like they are serious about an early opening! Last night it was in the low 20's here but has warmed up to 30 now. It should be colder up there though! They should have been able to make snow all night and at least for a while this morning. Will have to wait and see what the morning reports say! It won't be long now. :snow:

I heard similar stuff Terry. I had not heard about Sunday Punch yet , but make sense. I was surprised that were going top to botttom to begin with, but my guess is with the window of snow making shrinking they better give the mid station option a go.

Admittedly, I'm from the Midwest not the NorthEast, but I'm extremely excited about my trip to Stowe the second week of December. How does Stowe look?

IIRC Kton has a higher elevation, Thus keeps snow longer, is this correct?

Snow retention has something to do with elevation, but more importantly are face aspect, natural snowfall total, and latitude. Stowe will retain snow better due to it having more natural snow and colder temperatures longer than Killington. Killington has a higher lift serviced elevation but Mansfield is a bigger mountain with much of its terrain serviced from higher elevation lifts whereas Killington has only a handfull of higher elevation trails from the peak off the K1. Amount of snow blown is also an indication of apparent retention and Killington has historically had an edge in this category but doubtful that will continue. Enjoy your trip to Stowe! Be sure to give it another shot once the entire mountain is skiable.

Ah yes! the Dreaded South Face Melt down!

I will be at ESA Stowe but will stay Friday through Tuesday so I'll be doing some leisure skiing as well as the clinic. epic, from Epic is trying to convince me to make another trip to Stowe for ESA Stow in the spring, which will be the first week in March.
Not sure how that is going to work out.

BTW, epic said that it was snowing at Stowe a few days ago, but nothing that would Stick just yet.
I call that HOPE!

I've seen Stowe 100 percent skiable the first week in December..they can get dumped on early..hopefully by your trip they'll have the Gondola side open so they can spread out the people..Stowe is my favorite in the east but I mostly ski there late winter/spring.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hijack this thread. I have a bad way of doing that.
I'm just eager for ski season, aren't we all, and I am hoping for profound conditions for my trip.
The good news is, Stowe did a wonderful job of making things doable for us last year and the trip was great in marginal conditions. Kudos to them for that.
