I think any claims that snowboarders do more damage to snow surfaces than skiers is unsubstantiated and I'm a skier. I can somewhat buy the arguement that snowboarding can screw up mogul lines, but the same can be said for skiers who don't know how to ski bumps.

How this thread turned into another MRG debate, I have no idea. I will say that I am with dmc and I am for freedom for all types of riders everywhere. I can actually remember a time back in high school that skiers weren't allowed in the half pipe at Okemo. I got my pass taken away a couple of times by ski patrol for 'poaching' the pipe. Eventually that attitude changed. So might the attitude of the co-op towards snowboarding at MRG.

right on..
i was one of the people that fought at Hunter to open the original park when they considered making it snowboard only. i also fought closing Anna Purna to riders as well..

Snowboarders do change bumps.. And out of respect to skiers should stay out of hardcore bump lines. i do.. I'm not into skier bumps on a snowboard..

When I skied MRG it was all about the woods.. We hardely ever ventured out. And it would be the same on a snowboard... Woods bumps are a lot easier to me then bump lines..

I both ski and board and it's pretty clear. Either one can do little/no damage or tear it up bad, it all depends on how you ride it.

Part of freedom is MRG having the right to say no boards. Plenty of people like it that way so I have no problem with it. I would certainly be more likely to visit if the policy was changed though.

True... Very true...

It's not the freedom I question - it's the base intent of the ban compared to what is said in public.

Is it becuase that the equipment can't handle riders?

Is it because "trails" will be damaged because of riders?

Is it because they just dislike sharing trails with snowboarders - even if they prove themselves perfectly capable?

If it's the last one... Why even mention the first 2? Why justify what you really feel?

Chairs can be fixed... Boarders can be tested...
But the disslike of snowboarders on the same trail as you can't be fixed any time soon..

We just have to wait for these people to die out.. Hope I can last...

I know we've gone over this many times before, but I think posters like Jersey Joey muddy the waters and are lousy at stating a coherent case.

Regardless of historical incidents, its not about snowboarders scraping off snow or derailing the single or even about the argument with Betsy. The scraping snow issue is bogus, any bad skier/rider can scrape off plenty of snow. The problem with derailing single could be easily dealt with if MRG wanted to. While the incident with Betsy initiated the ban it's not really relevant today.

The ban is in place because the Co-Op doesn't want MRG to change. For a variety of reasons, snowboards have been lumped with slow lifts, little grooming and little snowmaking as one of the things that define MRG. The snowmaking thing won't change because there's no water. The Co-Op had the opportunity to put in a faster lift to replace the single and chose not to do so, even though the solution they chose cost more money. No one is asking for more grooming. No one (inside the Co-Op) is asking to lift the snowmaking ban.

Someday it might change, as skiing changes over the years the difference between boarding and skiing may become less apparent. It's happening now, but things will change slowly at MRG. Without real estate, snowmaking, or any chance of further development they owe their existence to a dedicated (nearly rabid) user base who ski there no matter what the conditions, year after year. Anything they do that affects that is bad for MRG. Getting a limited number of snowboarders who are willing to put up with the slow lifts and no grooming in order to access the wonderful terrain isn't enough to offset annoying the dedicated user base who don't want things to change. The objections aren't logical, but they exist. For better or worse, that core dedicated group keeps MRG running year after year, and no one is going to alienate them.

when mad river closes ill ski killington or jay. i would prefer not to ski at all if my only option was hunter. this dmc guy would hunt me down and do bad things to me. he is not a nice person and i want no part of him in person. i dont want a part of him here but he seems to have a way of calling people out so maybe i should just ignore him. he is full of anger and hatred and there is enough of that in this world right now as it is. ill take a pass on huntah.
