Last night while I was braving the icy bumps at Sundown, a couple my co-workers gave me a present. One of them was supposed to join me for some skiing, but he called me and told me he had to work late. Now I know what he was doing.

What is that 30"? It looks like you need a new video card to utilize all that space! Are you an architect?

Yes, I am.

Actually it is a 48". My normal monitor is a dell 24"which is more than big enough. I sat infront of that 48" for a couple of minutes to get the pictures and I have a head ache and a sun tan.:)

I can relate! A couple of times I've hooked my laptop upto my 50" TV at home, and while viewing pics of the family vacation is fine at that size, after a couple of minutes of reading text, my eyes were starting to do really funky things!

Now to get rid of Windows so you can actually utilize the full resolution :D

I have a 23" (1900x1200) display at home as well as at work, and they're really sweet for productivity. I'm down to only needing 4 virtual desktops instead of 8, thanks to the extra real estate.

Unfortunately my laptop doesn't have a DVI connector on it; I'd love to plug it into a big TV for slideshows. I'm not going to buy a new one (or an Apple TV) just for that, though.

I regularly use my home laptop on my 52" DLP at home. Its good for some things, pretty sucky for others.

Man, Tim, that's a nice office and workspace. I'm seriously jealous.

Well we have to impress the clients. You wouldn't hire a company to design your multi million dollar project if their office looked like a dump would you? I am pretty lucky and spoiled by my office. Randi works for another architectural firm down the road, and her office is even nicer!

Using the same logic, you wouldn't want to hire a company to install and maintain your LAN and WAN if the office looked like a shithole would you?

Oh....apparently they do. Pisser....

My wife is in the same field as you two. Her office is a lot nicer than mine, but doesn't quite look as nice as yours. At least they're working on it.

.

not really. Unfortunatly the design proffesion is judged by pretty shallow standards. We deal with some fairly high end clients and big dollar projects. When a potential client comes to our office they are not only there to meet us, but also to see what we can do first hand. They take a tour of our space and judge for themselfs if we are worthy of handling their project and the fees we charge. They also get a feel for what kind of space we are capable of designing for them so long the bufget allows it. So in that sense the office also acts a marketing tool.

Now if I was to go to an IT consultants office (or he came to mine) as I saw that he was using some old beat down computer that crashed every 5 minutes I wouldnt hire him. But if he was using state of the art technology, and his office had a sweet LAN setup I would want to hire the guy (as long as I could afford it). IMO that would be a moe accurate comparison.
