So, I've settled on Route 4 through Andover to New Canada Road as my preferred route to Ragged. It's a good ten to fifteen minutes quicker than going up to 104 through Bristol.
I had heard that New Canada road is quite rough (it's dirt), but it really is fine. I drive a Sedan and probably won't be taking it during mud season, but all winter it's been well maintained. The speed limit for the road is 25 mph. It's over 2, probably closer to 3 miles long and if there are 10 houses on the whole stretch, there isn't 11.
Today I came up over a rolling hill and just as I crest it I see a cop sitting in front of two of the homes parked and pointed straight up at me. Blue Lights go on he steps out of the car to flag me down.
I roll to a stop. "Problem officer?" cop, "Yes you were going 41, the speed limit is 25." I might have been going 36/37, but not 41 unless I've got some calibration issues with my speedometer.
He let me off with a verbal warning, which I was very grateful for. The cop goes on to state that, "The residents of this road are tired of skiers speeding. In fact there is a motion before the town selectman to make the road one way in the opposite direction during the mornings to eliminate this short cut. You don't want that to happen do you? So slow down."
If I were a town selectman and the 8 residents of a 3 mile long town maintained dirt road requested this, I'd say, "I'll do you one better. The road is now yours. Yep, private road just for you. Enjoy the plowing and maintenance costs." NIMBYs drive me crazy sometimes.
With the proposed 500+ residential units to be built, the nearly doubling of skiable terrain and most likely skier visits, that road is going to see a LOT more traffic. Will be interesting to see what happens with New Canada road.
