So, I've settled on Route 4 through Andover to New Canada Road as my preferred route to Ragged. It's a good ten to fifteen minutes quicker than going up to 104 through Bristol.

I had heard that New Canada road is quite rough (it's dirt), but it really is fine. I drive a Sedan and probably won't be taking it during mud season, but all winter it's been well maintained. The speed limit for the road is 25 mph. It's over 2, probably closer to 3 miles long and if there are 10 houses on the whole stretch, there isn't 11.

Today I came up over a rolling hill and just as I crest it I see a cop sitting in front of two of the homes parked and pointed straight up at me. Blue Lights go on he steps out of the car to flag me down.

I roll to a stop. "Problem officer?" cop, "Yes you were going 41, the speed limit is 25." I might have been going 36/37, but not 41 unless I've got some calibration issues with my speedometer.

He let me off with a verbal warning, which I was very grateful for. The cop goes on to state that, "The residents of this road are tired of skiers speeding. In fact there is a motion before the town selectman to make the road one way in the opposite direction during the mornings to eliminate this short cut. You don't want that to happen do you? So slow down."

If I were a town selectman and the 8 residents of a 3 mile long town maintained dirt road requested this, I'd say, "I'll do you one better. The road is now yours. Yep, private road just for you. Enjoy the plowing and maintenance costs." NIMBYs drive me crazy sometimes.

With the proposed 500+ residential units to be built, the nearly doubling of skiable terrain and most likely skier visits, that road is going to see a LOT more traffic. Will be interesting to see what happens with New Canada road.

You don't think so? I've timed it. If I go to 104 through Bristol it's an 1:40. If I take New Canada it's 1:25. It's also about 15 miles shorter, so you save a bit on gas too. More than anything, I find Route 93 to be an extremely BORING interstate to drive. I much prefer getting off 5 miles north of Concord and taking the scenic roads than going 30 miles up to the Meridith exit.

The only time I went to Ragged from MA, I went route 4 all the way to 104(maybe before New Canada was built?). What is the time savings?

Is New Canada Road not in Danbury? If I was the town selectman, I might be more concerned about tax revenue from a the town's biggest business than eight whinny residents. You don't want traffic? Buy or build a house set back from the road.

from that side it's about 7 miles worth of road and 10 minutes worth of time. New Canada road starts in Wilmont, but the vast majority I believe to be in Danbury. It was a Danbury cop.

You get my point exactly. The two houses that he was parked in front of happened to be the 2 houses set only about 20 feet off the road. Some of the other houses are 'estate' like and set much further back.

New Canada road

My Tom Tom always brings me in through a dirt road. I bet its the road youre talking about. If it has a house with a large red tow truck mailbox that's the one.

Google map changed?

Interesting. When I did "directions" in google map to Ragged, it used to route me through New Canada road. Not anymore and it is now route me up rt 4 to rt 104 to the access road. Interestingly, I cannot even drag the route around to force it go through the Canada rd either. Looks like now Canada Rd is categorized as unpassable in Google map.

FWIW , i've only been to ragged once and it was last month. Going in we took new canada road, leaving we stuck to the paved roads. me and the other guy in the car both agreed new canada was 10 - 15 minutes faster.

For me it's well worth the extra 10 minutes of boredom to drive on paved roads where I'm pretty sure my vehicle will stay in one piece. Just saying.

my formative driving years were in Vermont on dirt roads. New Canada road is practically a highway compared to many of the roads I grew up driving

The dirt roads around here are smoother than the paved ones. The frost heaves suck right now.

Holy mackerel, do they ever! Moultonborough to Lincoln was torture yesterday...coming back, I made my husband stay on "major thoroughfares!" (At least until we got to the point where we had no choice. ; - )
