Belleayre

Try Belleayre. It's not far from Albany and we don't tend to get as crowded as Hunter/Wyndham on the weekends. It's a nice mountain with a little of everything but I wouldn't rate it as an expert mountain. We've got a few trails which are considered expert trails but we have a lot of intermiediate and beginner terrain. It's also more family oriented than many mountains in the area, or at least, it's sold as that. :)

You're certainly close enough to going up to Vermont as well. I'd suggest making some trips up there, too.

Good luck. If you decide to go to Belleayre let me know. I'm on the ski patrol there and can help show you around the mountain.

Hunter

I live in Southern VT. Hunter is cool period. It has more sustained pitch then either Mount Snow or Stratton. During the week its awesome yeah its crowded on weekends but so are most places but if you try and figure it out you can avoid the crowds. Thier local motion series kills our Valley league as a local race series. Hunter gets such a unfair bad rap. I ski well over 100 days a year up here in VT I live less then 3 miles from a resort ,most people that complain about Hunter have some other thing going on. I've met some awesome skiers up or should I say down there, had some great times actually the best of times and I'm sure Ill have plenty more. Ignore the bad rap keep a open mind and you will be so suprised.

Seriosuly - come to Hunter... JimG and I will take you around... Maybe get some woods skiing in... It will be cool...
I love changing peoples mind about Hunter...

Thanks for the invite but that would be a hard sell. As for Windham I don't really ski there much either once or at most twice a year is all I can take of that place its not like I am a Windham lover its just a good spot for a day trip. Most of the time I am in Vt or out west.
ALLSKIING - take him up on it. I can speak from experience that these guys will give you the grand tour and make you ski your @$$ off all day.

Greg - I have been to hunter ten times since I moved to NY five years ago I know it pretty well. I don't mean to give hunter a bad rap I just don't like the mountain for reasons I posted. The terrain is good but when I want kick ass terrain hunter does not come to mind. What does is tucks or bear at k or the snow fields at crested butte. But that is just my opinion.

Great opinion... BUT - the question was about skiing close to Albany not how awesome you are cause you can ski Tucks or OL......

Last I checked - Tucks was 5 hours and KMart was 3 from Albany...

Tell me what mountain kicks ass close to Albany???
That was the original topic...

Skiing from East Greenbsush

The person who started this thread status that she was from East Greenbush. She's real close to Jiminy and Mount Snow. I would suggest going to Mount Snow for the daytrip as it is easy enough for her to get on Route 7 from where she is, and go to Jiminy for night skiing.

Hunter? Full of ONY's, but all the trails are conquerable.

I think I see an obnoixious New Yorker to the left of that snowgun... But it's tough to tell through the huge Hunter crowds...

Peeps, can't we get along? Rossi, what's the point of going out of your way to trash New Yorkers as obnoxious when your initial purpose was to get back on topic for a person who just moved to NEW YORK? Do you think she'll appreciate that she just moved to a state full of "obnoxious" people? Or do you think she will ski elsewhere, maybe your beloved Mt. Snow (which, last time I was there, was full of these ONY's as you call them)?

So you and ALLSKIING don't like Hunter and DMC and I love it...can't we discuss it without trashing the state it's located in? News Flash!! There are obnoxious people everywhere in the world, not just NY. Should I assume that everyone in some state is obnoxious because I skied in an area I didn't like in that state?

Let's get real.

C'mon boys and girls - let's all just get along, please. Remember this forum is about skiing, not who's from where or what we think of our bretheren across state lines.

As a native New Yorker (way upstate), I take umbrage at those who trash the whole state and everyone in it, many times without 1st-hand experience. I choose to live in Mass., but NY rocks, from Manhattan to Lake Placid to Niagara Falls. Don't be put off just because The City is big, and the locals move and talk fast. If you lived there, you would be the same way. Just be happy they don't come up to your little town in Podunk, NH and kick your a$$.......

ONY's

Hey I wasn't trashing ONY's. I am one. Takes one to know one I guess. It's not that Hunter is a bad mountain, it was just that it seemed that there was an abundance of NYC people there and they have the ability to change the atmosphere in what seems to be a negative way. Had skis stolen from there. But who knows, could have been a Jersey person who nabbed them.

Mount Snow isn't precious to me. We just went there last week for a few days and had a good time. It's only 60 miles from my front door. Prefer Okemo or Stowe.

Heh heh...like I said before -- most people strongly prefer one over the other when it comes to Hunter vs. Windham. It's like the Yankess vs. Mets rivalry...you rarely get people who switch sides and you rarely get people that truely like both. People who love Windham love Windham, and the people that love Hunter love Hunter.

Irishpub3, I suggest you check them both out personally. I think they are both great mountain in their areas of strength. If you care about service, amenities, ambiance, etc, you will more probably like Windham more. It caters more to the affluent crowd, whereas you can argue that Hunter is more for the common people (of course these are generalizations).

As far as obnoxious New Yorkers, both are full of ONYs... heck it's only 2.5 hours to NYC! It's not much different that dealing with ONYs at places like Killington or Mount Snow though. The main difference is that the ONYs at Windham have a lot more money on average than the ONYs at Hunter.

For a little more on the Catskill ski resorts, check out this recent article from Ski Magazine:

DMC arent you from Jersey prior to Albany??? :D :D

Just playin - couldnt resist!!!!

Sure... And Ohio before that..

Funny thing about that comment is...
More skis get stolen from Windham then Hunter...

The thing that makes me mad about this thread is just blatantly dissing a mountain... With no reasons givin...
So there's people struggleing to make a living in Hunter... And I support them any way I can... If blasting someone for vague comments that portray something as negative is bad... Then I'm bad...

   ! I was saving that for when DMC was accused of being just another ONY. In fact, I think DMC is originally from the midwest (Ohio?).
