Irishpub3, I suggest you check them both out personally. I think they are both great mountain in their areas of strength. If you care about service, amenities, ambiance, etc, you will more probably like Windham more. It caters more to the affluent crowd, whereas you can argue that Hunter is more for the common people (of course these are generalizations).

First of all GO METS!!!!
Secondly... How's Hoboken doing?? my band used to play O'Donhues and some other places there...

Now..
As I originally posted...
Hunter is a great mountain for beginners and experts... The beginner area and learning Center are kick ass.. I've personally taken my nieces and nephews through there - got rentals and lessons flawlessly...
Hunter West offers some of the steepest most interesting expert terrain around...

Windham is a great mountain for intermediate cruising.. Nice trails...
Bellayre is nice for cruising too!!

But who knows, could have been a Jersey person who nabbed them. .

DMC arent you from Jersey prior to Albany??? :D :D

Just playin - couldnt resist!!!!

Sure... And Ohio before that..

Funny thing about that comment is...
More skis get stolen from Windham then Hunter...

The thing that makes me mad about this thread is just blatantly dissing a mountain... With no reasons givin...
So there's people struggleing to make a living in Hunter... And I support them any way I can... If blasting someone for vague comments that portray something as negative is bad... Then I'm bad...

DMC, you're making me laugh with your eubonics. Poor people trying to make a living at Hunter... They just raised the minimum wage. That should help the lifties at Hunter. Nobody is trashing Hunter. It aint a bad place.

I thought "dissing" was part of the english vernacular?

I'm more refering to people I know that own businesses and depend upon skier traffic through Tannersville...
Some good stuff happening - stores and resturaunts - in Hunter/Tannersville...

Times are Tough Everywhere

Hey DMC, times are tough everywhere. 60 of my coworkers were just laid off and 13,500 of my fellow employees were axed as well. I know a lot of unemployed people, most with families. Upstate is economically distressed. It's not just in the Catskills. NYS has over 60 mountains, more than Utah and Colorado combined. Many of them are mom and pop places that live hand to mouth. I try to ski as many of them as I can. I'll get back to Hunter this year. Heck, I've got a coupon!

Times are tough... No doubt...

I tend to act locally and think globally... Just supporting my friends and hoping their businesses grow and prosper... I really believe that once the new hotel is finished at Hunter that these people will do well - due to the new tourist traffic.....

Give me a hoot when you head over...

Snowboarder?

DMC, you avatar shows a snowboarder. You stated skiing at Hunter for 25 years. If you are a snowboarder then that must be recent affliction. Please explain.

I started snowboarding in 1988... Fought to allow access to mountains and trails... Switched to just boarding a few years after that... But the last couple of years I've been bump skiing again as well as learning to telemark..

I know I sound like a militant snowboarder.. But I'm also a militant skier as well!! :)

Your avatar has a chicken on it... Whats up with that??? ;)

militant. . .

militant meaning obnoxious? just kidding bro! rock on.

The chicken is actually a nightengale. That's what Rossignol means in french. Greg the Moderhater put it on my account. Punishment for being obnoxious, I meant militant.

Go Mets?!? I thought Hunter skiers were supposed to be Yankee fans! :) Hoboken is doing well...has changed a lot even in the 5+ years that I've been there. O'Donhues still bumps with bands on the weekends, but a lot of places have gone out of business in the past few years, including the Clam Broth House and Cadillac Bar. Most of the stuff that goes out of business seems to be coming back as upscale restaurants or yuppie lounges. You are actually finding places that charge $7 for a beer now at some of these new places!!! Luckily the down-home Irish Pubs are still around.

I've never heard a bad thing about the new learning center at Hunter...heck it's now even the model for other mountains on how to build a learning center from what I've been reading. Then again, I haven't been through a learning center in a long time. Hunter has been transforming itself to be family-friendly, and the new condo-hotel is the next major step in that. Heck, even some of the Windham crowd might get drawn over starting next year with its year-round heated outdoor pool, spa, gym, valet parking, etc....very un-Hunter indeed. It's the quality bedding that has been lacking there though.

Since Belleayre has been brought up a couple times, I'll add my two cents. I think it's a good place for families due to its atmosphere. I also respect their recent strong commitment to snowmaking. Overall though, I'll still like the other places in the Catskills over it. (That doesn't mean I don't go there every once in a while though.) Plattekill is another great mountain (when there is natural snow). I love the trails there, and anyone who feels they are a solid skier should go check it out. If you find that the trails aren't challenging enough for you, grab a bike trail map. Anyone who has taken a mountain bike out there can tell you, it's tough! And yes, I hear there are 10+ feet drop offs in some spots.

Try Hunter on a Tuesday for $21 for local residents in counties like Greene, Ulster, Columbia, and others.

Try Belleayre on a weekend. Belleayre is not very crowded on weekends. Also check out Belleayre's Special Events http://www.belleayre.com/winter/special.htm like Skier Appreciation $15 Days on Jan 14, Feb 11, Mar 11. Also Belleayre Winter Festival $10 tickets for Jan 24, 25, 26, 27, and 28.

If you like steep trails with lots of powder try Plattekill after a big snow dump. The skier/snowboarder traffic on the trails is extremely light, which means you will find untracked powder for days after a snow dump at Plattekill.

After you try Hunter, Belleayre, and Plattekill , then try Windham.

Heh heh...like I said before -- most people strongly prefer one over the other when it comes to Hunter vs. Windham. It's like the Yankess vs. Mets rivalry...you rarely get people who switch sides and you rarely get people that truely like both. People who love Windham love Windham, and the people that love Hunter love Hunter.

As far as obnoxious New Yorkers, both are full of ONYs... heck it's only 2.5 hours to NYC! It's not much different that dealing with ONYs at places like Killington or Mount Snow though. The main difference is that the ONYs at Windham have a lot more money on average than the ONYs at Hunter.

For a little more on the Catskill ski resorts, check out this recent article from Ski Magazine:

ok.... now i'm sold... just another commoner here
DMC, you've taken so much heat here.... i'm starting to feel bad for you... I'm gonna go with Hunter over Windham, that's for sure!

I love changing peoples mind about Hunter...

My mind was set straight last March on a midweek powder day at Hunter! Awesome! Nothing like I expected. People were friendly, the mountain was challenging, and no weekend crowds.
