Our local tree service just picked up a pretty nasty crane

You would think that a local mill would take that off your hands.

This is their "small" crane.

cten, I this the new crane can do this from across the street! Now Warp, I'd guess these are 60-foot trees. Is your tree really 140'? Old growth pines are only about 100'. I don't know nuttin' about poplars.

Will have to keep these guys in mind when I need to pull some trees in the back yard. The retaining wall in the front makes it impossible to get a crane in the back. Would be fun to watch, especially since the utility wires run up my side of the street.... :)

Paging Glenn!

He had a BIG tree pulled out of his back yard at his place in VT a while back. A cutting from the stump was around 5 feet in diameter if I recall correctly!

He's got some cool pics of the tree "flying" over his house!

We had a biiiiiiig poplar taken down. I can't remember how tall it was, but it was tall. The guy said "Any bigger, and we couldn't have used this crane". So thankfully, we took it down when we did. We had them take a number of pines down as well. I'm not a tree service guy, but the crane is probably a lot safer vs. dropping a tree with a saw and a felling wedge.

Here's the crane:

Here's the tree from the upper part of the backyard:

Turbo diesel chipper. It had a winch to pull the tree in. Unreal.

THUMP!

As Jeff mentioned, we used the rounds. They were cool enough to cut some for us when I explained I wanted to make some tables.

They shrunk quite a bit over the first winter. I read online that I could have soaked them...then slowly dried...but it was quite a process. We ended up finishing them with out an outdoor poly...and putting them on some pine rounds. They flank our Mt Snow Yankee Clipper/American Express/Grand Summit Express Chair nicely if I do say so myself.
