BTW, I overheard a patroller at Cannon talking last month. She was an x-patroller at Camelback I believe. Said that almost all medical evacs take place by helicopter. Apparently 10-20 per weekend day was not uncommon. 2 hospitals competing for business she posits.

That's eems outragously high. 30 minutes to a hospital is not a big deal. Aeromed is for major traumas, not torn acls. If they are flying that many, they have a serious problem. I'd be pissed if I got a $4000 helo bill when I should have gone by ground.

Yeah, that seems off to me too. The overwhelming majority of ski injuries are easy to stabilize for transport. Even the local L II regional trauma center is only ~45 minutes away.

10-20 helicopter evacs per weekend day? The place must look like a war zone with helicopters coming and going.

LOL. I've prob logged 30-40 ski days in my life at Camelback (but almost none in the past 5 years), and I, for one, have seen nary a 'copter evac.

Those closest to metro areas are the worst for petty theft.

Hmm, methinks that is a pretty loaded statement. Do we have statistics to back that up?

Thats why I goto JFBB instead of Camelback, even though I live equally between them.

My uncle was a ski patroller at Jack Frost for 15 years and he was there to help injured skiers not whistle at people hitting jumps on the side of the trails..

At Blue mountain..the most I've seen is 3 heli transports in a day, my ski buddy broke his femur the other day and he went to the Hospital 30 minutes away in an ambulance. But it was foggy that day..

JF is the polar opposite of Camelback when it comes to skiing off the trails, Def. one reason why I love it there.

completely agree. Tree skiing has never earned me one word from a patroller. I have also seen them watch people go down slopes that are marked as closed. Their policy is basically, if you don't get hurt or hurt other people while you're out there, have fun.

Yea I really appreciate that policy. It makes JF a lot more interesting than the other mountains. Basically all of our mountains are short, and any amount of steepness is not all that steep, or for that long. All you can hope for is a bunch of laps and turns on the same stuff all day. At JF when the snow is good you can get out into glades and some narrower stuff that is really fun. When the snow is bad, it is generally better at JF than anywhere else. Its pretty much win-win.

Well said. They make the most out of the lack of vert. Skiing trees / glades gives it a "bigger" feel. When there's snow in there I'm barely on the marked trails. It's funny, Camelback is only about 35 / 40 minutes away, I forget it's even there sometimes.

I think it's time to give the Camelback patrollers and rangers a break..they risk their lives keeping the mountains safe and with 4-7 inches expected tonight in the Poconos..you can be sure the Camelback patrollers will be up early bombing the major avalanche routes..

Ha I got a good laugh out of that. I would flip out in one of the situations where I get "pulled over" by a Camelback or Blue douche bag. They're not patrolling anything at that point. One of the reasons I fell in love with skiing as a kid was the freedom. I was 7 years old and 10 away from being able to drive a car, being able to do anything without being told. And here I am going as fast as I want, making turns when I want, picking trails I want, having fun based on my own decisions. It is pure freedom to do what you want. Now that I'm 20 I still feel that way, I'm riding down the mountain and I'll be popping in and out of the trees at JF, popping spins and buttering, having a good time. That is skiing and snowboarding to me, having fun doing what I want and can do on the trail. And some patroller is going to come over and tell me its unsafe and I can't do it? At that point its not even worth going to that mountain ever again. I wouldn't care if they had more snow than anyone else, if they are going to tell me what I can and can't do on a trail, that freedom is lost and it looses half the fun. I ski to get away from the real world and its restrictions, if they add that in what is the point.*

*I say that with the note that I don't endanger anyone else, I don't buzz people or jump into blind spots, people who do that do need to be reprimanded because they are going to hurt someone, I'm never doing this stuff near other people.
