I thought that maybe he was misquoted. But when you read all of the context, including the weather "turning on a dime", I really don't think that he was misquoted.
Maybe he meant 80% of the resort, which would have been more or less correct?

And a big improvement from the ~50% resort open the week prior thanks to the quick turn of the weather?

(I've only had ONE experience with local paper journalists as a witness of one unfortunate event -- not ski related. Their "freedom" to reshape reality were astonishing. So I'm more incline to blame it on the journalist. Perhaps you should just drop an e-mail to the speaker and ask him what he actually said?)

Except that he was talking about the state as a whole. I suppose it's possible that he was referring to just one resort and that's where he was misquoted. I'm not sure what resort that would have been, though.

In the shadow of the moon.
No resort had 80% open by end of DEC. in the North East this year. By mid Dec, K-ton and Stowe had 20%, or less, open. By end of Dec, they lost ground because of 70* weather. Something is wrong with that story.

The more amazing statistic is that supposedly skiing is literally 25% of the Vermont economy. That's incredible if true.

Here is the quote:
"All told, the ski industry is about 30 percent of Vermont’s tourist economy, Riehle said, which in turn represents about a quarter of the state’s economy."

This guy wouldn't know the truth if it smacked him in the face. For his statement to be true, tourism must be 83% of the state's economy.

EDIT: Did he mean that tourism in general is 25% of the state's economy? That I could believe.

Well, had he got a good grasp for math, he probably would have prefer to become a doctor rather than a journalist.

That said, skiing being 30% of tourist economy doesn't surprise me. What other kind of tourism are there in Vermont?

Summer/Fall is larger.

Many hotels actually drop their rates during winter.

Which part of Vermont has higher rate in the summer?

I know the leaf-peeping part of the season is the most expensive. But I've gone to VT in the summer (mtn biking) and found lodging price far lower than in the winter.

Stowe for instance.

You can compare rates her for one of the access road motels.

Strange, the last time I was at Stowe in the summer (a couple years ago, for a cycling event), I seem to recall it being considerably cheaper than what I paid in the winter. But I totally forgot which place it was.

It really depends on the part of the state. Stowe is indeed busier in summer. Burlington area, Woodstock and maybe Manchester are busier in summer. Mount Snow, Stratton, Okemo, Killington, Sugarbush, Jay? All definitely no.
