Ok...now i may be the one getting shit for this (take a bit of heat off of GSS) but.....people over a certain age SHOULD NOT be driving!!

I was in the supermarket today...my beautiful black SUV that i have had for one year...TODAY...is sitting in the parking lot soaking up the sun :) I am walking to the car, about 10 feet away watching this older man back out of the space next to my car...he seems like he has NO idea how to drive...i stop in my tracks as i dont want him to run my ass over...he puts the car in gear and hits the gas like hes Dale Earnhardt...only thing is, is that he forgot to turn the wheel to get past my truck. Smashes into the drivers side towards the back and pushes my truck 6 feet to the right and 2 feet forward in turn smashing my truck into 2 other SUVs. After i get my bearings together, i realize that if i had been walking a bit faster, he would have maimed or possibly killed me. He never gets out of his car...just backs up like hes going to drive away until another man walked up to his car and made him turn off the car. Anyway...no one was in their cars when this happened, except the idiot who hit my truck...hes fine. Now the cops get there and hes getting snippy with them, attitude and whatnot...im on the phone with GEICO so i cant get the whole conversation, but i hear the cops telling him he cant drive home...turns out the guy is retired NYPD and was giving them shit telling them he was a LEIUTENANT and hes higher ranked...blah blah blah...next thing i know the cops get in his car and drive his ass home!! WTF?!?! Now i think this is fishy...i think the man was drunk or heavily medicated...i dont know....all i know is that i am out of a truck...tons of damage and undrivable...i had to go rent a G**damn Nissan Altima....LOL...thats what GEICO gave me :) I want my truck back!!!

Ok...done with my rant...

So the cops helped him leave the scene of an accident? He was probably drunk and the cops covered for him. Surprised that NCPD would do that for a Retired NYPD officer. Which market? I'm assuming it was the 7th precinct. You may want to give the Captain over there a buzz.

Wow, crazy story. I don't know about there being cut-off age, but they should be tested every year.

Sorry about your car. :-(

I agree..I have so many customers who go in and buy a tombstone for their spouse/sibling/preneed for themselves..who are so freaking out of it..not just physically but mentally..then get in their four thousand pound Buick and back on the road. The utility pole by the driveway at work gets backed into at least 4 times a year by elderly customers. My late grandfather lost his driving privilages when he crashed into another car and failed a driving test...my grandmother now has a driver after smashing into her garage during a mini-stroke which she was non-chalant about..I wish they retested people at a certain age..AARP is such a large lobbying body that they give money to government officials to keep from retesting Seniors..I actually think everybody should be retested every 5 years or so since people vision and reflexes change.

The mother of a kid I went to High School with was shopping in a Jewelry store in the local shopping center and an 80-something year old man lost control of his vehicle and smashed through storefront pinning her under the car..she died..she was about 60 years old and the elderly man lost his driving privilages but didn't even go to jail..He was freaking out of it..and shouldn't have been driving.

Teenage drivers are pretty bad but I feel elderly drivers are even worse..they rarely use turn signals..stop where there is no stop sign..and have bad hand eye coordination and reflexes..the next time one of my customers hooked up to an oxygen tank gets into his or her Buick I will think of this thread and all the possible victems on the road..

That totally sucks, Kris. :(

I think I heard once that elderly people cause more accidents than teenagers. My first accident was some elderly person who wasn't paying attention and pulled across 2 lanes of oncoming traffic to smash into the side of my mom's car (I was 17 at the time). And my mom actually bitched at me for it.

Anyway, the situation definitely sounds fishy. Sorry you had to go through it.

They just don't have the reaction time. but they should be tested every year once they hit 70 then even 6 months up to the testers evaluation. Will never happen though. Driving is a priviledge, not a right.

So did they actually file a real report to show that the guy was at fault?
Did the insane elderly guy have insurance?

Yeah, I hope you got some sort of police report showing he was at fault and his info. Otherwise I'd be really pissed!

Glad to hear that you weren't hurt though.

Nevermind, I guess it depends on the jurisdiction... some won't even respond to an accident on private property if no PI (peronsal injury) is reported.

If they were there, though, there def. should be some sort of incident/call report.

I don't think accident reports are written for those that take place on private property, are they?

Good question. It might depend on the level of damage. There has to be some way that the guy is held accountable...

Kris,
GO TO IT!!! HE/His insurance pays!!! ...that is, if he has any.......
*Some company should get with it...and make cars for the elderly crowd....ie...lots of rubber(or similar) around the edges...
