Skiing with my son this weekend and we were chit-chatting on the lift. He asked the question which i pose to you all:

"If you could only ski one mountain the rest of your life where would it be?"

My answer Alta with Alpine Meadows as a close 2nd. Of course, i lead a sheltered life and don't get to many exciting places.

If you've skied in Utah and Tahoe, I'd hardly call your life sheltered.

In my limited experience, I would say Snowbird, if I don't have to worry about the crowds. If crowds are to be taken into consideration, I'll take Solitude.

One mountain... hmmm...

With unlimited funds, I'd go with one of the big European resorts since they're so much bigger than anything in North America. Les Trois Vallees? The Arlberg? Tignes/Val d'Isere? Chamonix?

If you told me I had to both live there and ski there forever, I'd be tempted to go with Ski Santa Fe. The ski area is pretty good and Santa Fe is a great place to live. It's a state capital so you're not stuck in a little make-believe resort town. You have a good airport serviced with cheap Southwest flights an hour away in ABQ. Even better, summer is their high season so I can rent my adobe house for big bucks and go hit salt water.

Great question.

If the only criteria is the ski area itself then I would have to say Verbier cause nothing I’ve skied can beat it. However, I wouldn’t want to live out of the U.S.A.

Kind of my take. There are plenty of areas I'm sure that would rank at the top of the list, but few that actually lie in places I'd like to live.

The reality is, New England is where my heart is and where I wish to live. In doing so, I forfeit living in locations of the country that offer much better skiing. That said there are also far worse places for skiing one could live than here to. It's not the best, but it's certainly pretty great as evidenced by all the enthusiam all of us AZer's have here on the board.

So, by that criteria, I'd probably choose Stowe with Sugarbush coming in a very close second. Stowe gets the nod for the Chin and BC options in the Notch.

If we're talking dream ski area? Probably one of the European Giants planted in South Central, NH with Mt. Baker snow totals

As of now Jackson Hole..hands down...but that's after about 30 days skiing the mountain..so maybe after a couple hundred days at the mountain I'd get bored and wish I had chosen Okemo or Blue mountain..lol

Without reading the thread..I really hope nobody choses a mountain in the east..lol

Oh yeah and ideally I'd live in Jackson December to April and in the east the rest of the year...

There are too many mountains I've never been to to even begin to try answering this. Ask me again in ten or so years...
