i switched over to snowboarding last season after skiing for a long time.
every now and then i get tempted to pack my skis on my trip just in case i want to ski a bit but never got around to it due to obvious inconveniences.
last year during my trip to stowe, i demoed a pair of mojos for 2 hours after having snowboarded the whole season and i thought, it is not bad to mix it up some times.

anyone out there who mixes up during the season between skiing and snowboarding?
if you do, how do you mix it up?

It's easy, just bring all of your stuff and switch when you feel like it. It's easier to deal with if you get there early enough so that your car isn't too far away. I make my decision based on the speed of whom I am with. I'm much faster on my skis than my board. My wife skis slowly so I tend to ride when I'm with her.

It's really no big deal - unless your my kid and insist on new gear for both sports that you will outgrow.

I do both... Not so much recently.. Mostly ride cause it's easier to deal with..

Back in the day - I used to snowboard in the morning when it was groomed and ski after lunch when it was bumped..

In the spring my thoughts turn to skiing because of moguls...

I'm opposite of you guys. Long time skier who learned to board. I ski more and board less every year. I've got 5 days in on skis this season and 0 on my board. I will sometimes switch at lunch. Whe I do that I always start on skis and switch to the board in the afternoon. I am bringing it on vacation this year and will get at least 1 or 2 days in.

most of the time when i get tempted to ski, it's because some nicely bumped up trail i happened to pass by. i see what you mean with the bumps. sounds like a good strategy.

To me most moguls are for skis... I can make it through a bump line on a board... But with skis it all comes together... Made by skis... Ride em on skis..

mmmmmm..... spring bumps... zipperlines.... mmmmmmmm

actually i bought my kids new gears. the cost for 2-3 seasonal rentals would pay for their equipment. not top of the line, but beginner stuff they can use for good 2-4 seasons. now their boots are a different story. they need a new pair every season, but we have friends that we can give them away to so we don't feel so bad. :)

I started skiing 11 years ago and 7 years ago started snowboarding (No, I'm not in my teens!). Figured I'm not that good at skiing yet so it was a good time to try it. Did both for a while. Skiing in the morning and then riding in the afternoon. Got tired of doing both and enjoy riding much more and advanced soooooo much faster anyway so I haven't touched my skis in 3 years. Every season I plan on skiing, but just never get around to doing it. Maybe this season! I love snowboard boots too. I just don't have the time to do both. Maybe if I lived in Vermont or NH instead of Joysey and I got out a lot more I would be doing both, but I'm not(yet).

Skiing/boarding

Following a 34 year absence from the sport I returned to skiing 11 years ago at age 50 and immediately took up snowboarding. Today I split my time 50/50 between the two endeavors and like them equally. As a point of clarification, I ride a hardboot setup and only get on a freestyle board once or twice a season.

I run the NASTAR operation at Okemo and set one course with ski gates and one with snowboard gates on Saturdays and Sundays. I paceset both courses on skis because that was how my handicap was established but then I'll switch to the board to "run against myself".

Although traveling with multiple gear is a hassle, I always compete at the Nationals as both a skier and as a boarder.

I grew up skiing. Got somewhat bored and restless with it in my twenties and started boarding. The first few seasons I switched between gear depending on the level of people I was 'sliding' with. It wasn't long though until I was just as good either way. For the next 10 years I exclusively boarded. About 3 years ago I started to tele, partly for the challenge, but mostly for backcountry access. Now I snowboard 80% and tele 20%.

Bottomline......it's all good. Everytime I'm on the mountain I ride with a mixed group of skiiers and boarders. Other than minor elements (like traverses) there is no difference in the terrain that we all can handle and enjoy. That's why I always have to laugh at the silly and ignorant skiier -vs- snowboarder threads that pop up on sites like this.

This whole discussion makes me think of a scene from one of my favorite "B" movies:

Ma Kelly: You've gotten to be like a daughter to me and I wanna share somethin' with ya.
Lil: Awww, what's that Mom Kelley?
Ma Kelly: I go both ways.
Lil: Oh.

Mixing it up

I am a lifelong skier who took up boarding on a Christmas trip when there was no snow and only beginner slopes were open. I mostly ski but I love putting the board on when beginners & slow skiers are visiting because it's fun being "challenged" by the intermediate terrain. I also love the fact that after years of waiting for people and reluctantly skiing easy stuff just to hang with friends, they now have to wait for me! I take both sets of equipment on weeklong trips and alternate each day depending on who I'm skiing/riding with and what the conditions are. I rarely switch during the day (it takes too long and I always forget something) but I'll go out as a boarder one day, and as a skier the next day. It really gives you new perspective on certain slopes.....some turn out to be steeper on a board than I think they are when I'm skiing.
