Magic

not this year, not yet anyway.

Huh? My friends & I skied untracked snow all weekend. Plus the grooming has been great too. The woods are still a bit thin, I won't dispute that. Most everything else has been very good.

If you go by the snow report it doesn't sound very inviting with no blacks opened at all but on the other hand most of the greens and blue trails have comments of Advanced Only--all natural. While I like the sound of all natural the over all picture they are providing is not inviting to most.

Magic has this crazy habit of telling the truth in their snow reports. What are they thinking?? This past weekend was f-ing awesome there. Untracked fresh still found late sunday afternoon & in some lesser visited spots on Mon AM. It's game on up there.

I spent a week’s vacation at Mammoth Mountain a couple of years ago. The thing is, Mammoth was so...well, mammoth...that we never finished skiing all of the terrain that interested us. So I never saw the point of the longer car ride to June, when Mammoth was right there, and we hadn't come close to exhausting it.

Interesting choices. I have skied three of them Magic, June and Monarch and upon reflection they do have a similar "vibe" and I have had great times at all three.

I've only skied Magic, but have read about the others. Hearing they have a similar vibe is great, and I believe there is a market for them. Other areas I know of that seem to have that vibe too would be Plattekill, Hickory and I would put Mad River in there too. Have also heard about a place in Montana called Turner Mt which would seem to belong with the others mentioned. Anywhere else?

While I want them to tell the truth are the blues and greens that challenging that when left in the natural state they become advance and fun. If so that word (fun) needs to be spread throughout the report as well.

Yes, in fact Kinderspiel which is green was one of the best runs of the weekend, left in natural state through Monday. We were also skiing much of the east side, Sorcerer and Talisman, Wizard. Only Wizard was technically open but patrol is very understanding if you give them the respect they deserve.

Up your sleeve is another example of an intermediate trail that always delivers both snow, pitch variation and just plain fun.

In general Magic's greens are blues, blues = blacks etc.

I think a lot of the appeal of places like these is the counterculture vibe that comes with them. Kind of an "us against them" mentality.

I've been to Mammoth a bunch of times and prefer it to June because it is so big (really it is mammoth). When it is windy at Mammoth and only the lower mountain is open, June is the place to go. During really heavy snow years I will ski June on a Saturday vs put up with half of LA mobbing Mammoth and I can ski the steeps of lower June with a few others.

The flights to Mammoth Lakes aren't convenient flying from the East coast.

Done the drive many time from LA, Las Vegas and Reno. Reno is the easiest drive coming from the East coast. I typically fly to Reno, get up early ski at Mt Rose or Heavenly and then drive to Mammoth. The drive from LA and LAX in particular is long and traffic prone. If the pass is closed and you can't get to Mammoth you can ski the Tahoe areas while the plows clear the road.

Google has it right from the airport in Reno to the Canyon Lodge at Mammoth on dry roads. In heavy snow all bets are off as there are a few stretches of 395 where you don't want to be in a white out no matter if you have chains and a 4X4. If the weather is bad just hole up in South Tahoe and do laps in Mott Canyon at Heavenly until the weather clears and Mammoth is a quick 2.5 hours down the road. If you do the drive from Reno to Mammoth Lakes plan to stop at Mono Lake for an hour in daylight if you can as the tufa formations are worth the time.
