i'm planning on going out to slc the first week of march during my spring break but since i am only 21 it is either impossible to rent a car or it is way too expensive. i intend to ride at snowbird and solitude both of which i have been to before and maybe powder mountain or snowbasin. does anyone have any first hand accounts on how easy it is to get around on the busses. would not having a car be a huge problem?

you can do it, but its a pain. check out http://www.rideuta.com/schedulesAndMaps/routeSchedules/?routeGroupID=8 for the bus schedules. there is a bus that goes from downtown up the canyons, but it only runs once a day. you could also take trax to sandy and the bus from there, but carrying skis on the train might be difficult. if you haven't booked a hotel yet, it may be worth looking in sandy or midvale for a place to stay. its cheap and a lot more convenient. one more thing- hitch hiking up and down the canyon is usually easy and a lot faster than taking the bus. if you're lucky you could get a ride all the way into SLC. can't comment much about powder mountain or snowbasin, but i doubt there is a direct bus there.

I go to utah twice a year. When I go to Alta and the bird I don't need a car. We stay at the Marriot Residence Inn which is right across from the bus to little Cotton Wood Canyon. Best deal around. As for Snowbasin And Powder you need a car.

SLC w/no car

If you stay at the Best Western Cotton Tree Inn in Sandy, you can use the UTA coupon that comes with the "SuperPass" lift ticket deal to get you up to Alt/Snowbird or Brighton/Solitude FREE. The buses run for a couple of hours every morning and afternoon. Also, the hotel will gladly run you up to the parking lot at the base of the mountain road, where UTA "UP" and "DOWN" buses run all day. The hotel will also run you over to the TRAX station (about half a mile) so that you can go to Salt Lake Lake City pretty much anytime you like. There are also a number of decent restaurants within walking distance of the hotel itslef. If you are interested, I can give you some recommendations for eating in SLC. PM me. You can enjoy the place without a car and save some money.

Is that "Jim Wongs" or something like that buffet with the made to order stir fry and 7 zillion items still there on the main Drag in SLC?!?!? That place was awesome! Best buffet I've ever been to anywhere! If you're budgetarian and love a good feed I'd be there every night! :D

SLC eating

Hey LVNLARG, I haven't tried "Jim Wong's" (or something like that), but two places we like are Buca DiBeppo, and The Blue Iguana. I will try to check on that asian buffet. We are going to need a third night's dinner and it sounds interesting.

Hey Rick Kane. We will be getting out there Sunday evening Feb 26, and skiing Mon, Tue, and Wed. We will probably stay in Sandy at the BW. Where are you planning on staying? Maybe we can hook up. Since we skied Alta, Solitude, and Snowbasin last trip I am going to take my guys to Brighton, Snowbird this trip. They also definitely want to go back to Snowbasin this trip.

Hey Tiro.

We'll be there on Friday Feb 24 and leaving Tuesday Morning Feb 28. I imagine that you'll be staying at the Best Western also. Maybe we could hook up on Sunday night or Monday. At the very least I think I owe you a beer for showing me this deal!

BTW, I hear that the Bird and Alta are crowded on weekends. And you may have mentioned once or twice something about some place called Snowbasin. How is that for crowds on Saturdays?

I'm not sure on the name...I think Wong was in it but could be confusing it with something in FL. I DO know it was on the Sandy end of a strip mall on the main drag about 1/2 way between Sandy and "City Center"...(or Church Center as the case may be) if I remember right. It was like $9 and was the largest (more items then you can imagine) and best value buffet I've ever been too. I've never seen another buffet with Chefs to cook your picked out stir fry for you. This was 5 years ago so things might have changed....but I doubt it...it was popular as hell then and rightfully so.

Weekends in Utah

I have only been to Snowbird once on a Saturday, and they were running some kind of promo, and the Tram was crowded, but the rest of the mountain was fine. I am not the person to ask about weekends because I NEVER ski weekends...sorry.
