I have nothing against borders, im just saying from my own personal experiences ive only ever had incidents with boarders. Jim G had incidents with skiers so you cant win. But with that being said im surprised i havent been hit by a skier, wouldnt most of you say that there is about an 8-2 skier per boarders ratio on a hill at any given time?

It depends on the ski area, at Ski Sundown in CT I'd say it was much closer to 1:1...

I say let those who choose to "SNOWBOARD" anywhere & everywhere it is considered safe by the location managers...where immature behavior is prevalent by a small group of the populace, it is for the most part tolerated by mature individuals...

Oh man - why can't we all just get along????

Yeah, as a dedicated 2-planker boarders sometimes drive me nuts, but so do out of control skiers. We ought to focus on teaching newbies how to get down the mountain without killing themselves or others, whether they're skiers or boarders.....

Support your local snow pro - take a lesson!!

I have never been on a snowboard and when I started the sport in 1982, snowboarding was not a common thing. I will say that some positive things have come out of snowboarding, for one it brought alot of new snow loving people into the mountains and to ski areas to enjoy snow in a new way, secondly we all have nice terrain parks to ski/board in.

I know that running/owning a ski area/resort is not a real big money maker in most areas, so I believe that any way that brings more people to enjoy snowsports benefits all of us in the long run and brings much needed cash into the skiing economy. None of us want to see any more ski areas go out of business.

I do have a question for the snowboarders in the group. I have heard that they cannot go down really steep mogul/glade terrain with the same ease as a skier can, is this true??

Good grief; what a volatile subject! DMC, you really need to calm down. Don't make yourself out to be a martyr, taking hits for the sins of others. Sheesh. There have been people trying to make rational discussion and you've shot them all down with taunts and insults.
Administrators, is there any way to delete entries that have no value, such as one-word replies that are insults? Just wondering b/c it seems like there's something worth discussing here, but it gets bogged down with baloney.
I've often thought about owning/starting a 'winter resort' at some point, and I've never even considered the possibility of banning a particular method of glisse. It seems strange to me to do so, although I understand the history behind the ban at MRG and Alta.
At the same time, though, banning isn't necessarily "exclusionary," as someone offered--at least not in the negative sense. We ban murder, don't we? I wouldn't say the placement of a ban is a hidden phobia of whatever is being banned. I can't take my coffee into the local library, but I'm sure librarians drink coffee at some other place.
Should snowboard(er)s be banned? I would assert no. I understand that they can ruin tight, steep runs more than skiers, typically, but the issue seems to be more about the ability of the skier/rider. I've been frustrated by skiers ruining my lines as much as boarders, but it often has more to do with the fact that the person is in terrain that is not suitable for them. (case in point: last week heli-skiing with all skiers, some of whom really had no business being there and held up the whole group)
I agree that ski resorts need to be more strict about the terrain that they allow folks to access. Of course, the implementation and enforcement of this would be enormously difficult, but maybe that would be a more fruitful discussion. After all, isn't what we really want is a place to ski/ride without newbies ruining advanced runs, people skiing/riding into us, and a fun and safe place to be with friends/family?

certainly their perogative, but i think it's financial suicide in the long run for anyplace to ban riders.

I ride 75% of the time, ski about 20%, and drink beer in the lodge about 5%. Anyplace that bans riders loses 100% of my money, as well as the $ of my family and friends that go with me.

Disagreed. MRG is doing just fine, probably better financially than any other NE ski area, i.e. NO debt.

Face the music folks

Face the music. Last I heard, boarders were up to 25% of the attendance figures and growing. The two-stick (me included) numbers are steadily dropping.

They can co-exist quite nicely and, in fact, need each other economically speaking. If we didn't have the cumulative numbers of both, there would be more areas shutting down the lifts for good.

I've met more irresponsible skiers in 29 years than boarders, then again, boarders haven't been around that long. For the most part, I haven't noticed any better/worse.

I love the terrain parks, half pipes. I was really suprised that the ski areas put them in - I thought for sure their insurers whould nix the idea. But sometimes you must take a "business risk" if you want to survive. (Skiers, look at it this way, it keeps them busy, sequestered away from you ;)

For the most part, I'm quite happy to share the mountain. I'm glad to see the teleski and monoskis too.

It will be interesting to see, since boarder/skier is an intergenerational thing on how boarding evolves as boarders age. We can see old farts on skis today (me). I can't imagine what an old fart on boards will look like :)

Besides, at the end of the day, when everyone takes their clothes (er, uh, boards and skis) off, we're all pretty much the same.

This last comment should be pretty inciteful. I think I'll put on a flamproof suit and step out of room for a while.....

not sure about them doing better than anyother NE ski area.

But anyway, my key phrase was "in the long run". Resorts that do "fine" with a ban would do much better, imo, without the burden of excluding 50% of the customer base. With snowboarding becoming more popular each year it's just going to get harder and harder to ignore reality.

I do not board and have nothing against boarding.

How else will I be able to ski in the glades if it was not for the snowboarder who flattened out a path for me so I do not sink with my 99.9 Salomon Snowblades?

What is snowblading like? it looks kind of on the difficult side. I saw one guy snowblading at Berkshire East a few weeks ago, and he was falling on his face every 10 feet.
