I don't know about snowmaking in the MRV, but we've got some decent snow coming down right now here on the Valley floor. It looked for a few minutes like the beginning of a big dump (although, being a weather junky, I knew better) but it's settled into a good level of flurries. I'm hoping we're picking up a bit of lake effect off of Lake Champlain and that the resorts will get several inches throughout the night. Yeah, probably more wishful thinking, but hey, this is the season for dreaming...

Wachusett starts snowmaking tonight and should be open by this Sunday, 11/20.

Being a weather junky, you should know that this isn't a favorable set-up for Champlain lake effect. Winds are a bit north of due W right now maybe coming from 285 degrees on the compass. You can tell by looking at the direction of the plumes off of Erie and Ontario. Since Champlain is so narrow East to West, you really don't get lake effect in this situation b/c there isn't enough of a fetch to moisten and warm the air and create the necessary atmospheric instability. You need a wind coming more from due N or just west of N - anywhere between 330 and 360/0 to get Champlain going b/c of the MUCH lkonger North/South fetch.

Yeah, I know. Like I said, wishful thinking. :p

How much Chaplain Lake effect can you really get anyway? It seems like the Lake is too narrow for a storm system to fetch much water, plus the lake is frozen most of the winter.

I dont think it is too much but if you combine that with the oragraphical effect you could get a few inches

Yes, in my experience at SB and Bolton, it DOES come into play...but only a little bit here and there, which we will take.

SNOWMAKING ROLL CALL:

So who IS definitely blowing right now?

Sounds like we have:

  • Sugarbush
    Sunday River
    Sugarloaf
    Killington (can anyone verify?)

What about these places?

  • Sunapee
    Cannon
    Bretton Woods
    Wildcat
    Jay

Can anyone add/confirm?
