46er was talking about the Slides at Whiteface. I'd like the info for my personal use if possible, that's all.

It's me...I'm getting lost in all the math.

I haven't been to Sugarloaf so I have no basis for commenting on White Nitro, but whenever I heard a trail, at least in the east, being reported at >40 degrees I become pretty skeptical. Except if it's a 60 degree trail with a triple fall line at Denton (should I have not brought that up? :))

White Nitro is fairly steep, and I have skied it probably 50 times. I am not sure which part is more intimidating for me, the top part, or the section below Spillway X-Cut where the saftey net is located. Upper Bubblecuffer/Winters Way are also on the steep side.

When either section of White Nitro is icy (frequently) it is not a place one would want to fall, the slide could be long and dangerous.

Ovation gets my vote as the steepest trail that I have skied in the east, that trail gets my full attention when I ski it.

i know you're a vet but be careful in there dmc. forecast for sat doesn't look favorable.

as for the steepness discussion, at my home hill k, i guess lower ovation is the steepest, continuous trail there. the vertigo headwall feels steeper but 3 or 4 turns and you're done. fiddle & lower double dipper/downdraft are also contenders. lower dipper has a nice double fall line that adds to the fun.

Ehhhhhh...not trying to be smart, but I hate to tell you how many times in the past I've bagged on a Mt Washington trip because the weather forecast was sketchy only to be sorry I didn't go.

Going and being there and finding poor conditions is a problem only if you put yourself in a spot where you can get in trouble if the weather goes insane. And then, if the weather is bad, you might wait 10 minutes for it to change completely.

dmc is a pro...I've put my life in his hands up there. Very smart, doesn't take chances with Mother Nature.

Indeed. I skied the extension on one particularly harrowing spring day:

Despite the sun, it just didn't get warm enough to soften it up that day. The groomed section in the above pic looks pretty good, but trust me, it was slick that day. It was very firm underneath that thin layer of "pre-corn"... Survived it, but it wasn't pretty. :-o

Airplane is too hard to get because the topo map for that area sucks. I think it is around 45 for the upper few hundred ft of vertical though. GG? What do you mean by that, the GG is huge. I bet anywhere between 0 and 90 degrees.;-)

Thompson Brook, Wildcat: 27 degrees for 400 ft. of vertical. There is also a spot in there that is 37 degrees for 300 ft. of vertical and I have seen some tracks going into that area but really don't know if they ski that spot or just go down the ridge.

And DMC, there is chance I'll be at Tucks Friday or saterday. I have Inspired Bigs with fritchi freerides and a bright blue jacket. Say hello if you see me.

The last time that I had the chance to ski Upper White Nitro was on February 14th, 2005. The trail had been groomed, but the snow surface was frozen granular with mini death cookies on top. Each turn that I took started and avalanche of frozen ice pellets:-o I was happy just to get down past Spillway X-Cut.

Here is what the lower part looked like three weeks ago:

Even with the temperature near 70F, the trail still had icy spots.

What math are you in? If you passed geometry you should know how to do it. Just use tan(angle)=oppisite(vertical)/adjacent(distance)
