I think humans as a whole are inherently good, but a small percentage will always be selfish and greedy and take whatever they are able to. Throughout all of history, there has and always will be a proletariat class. History shows there are have's and have nots.....the degree of disparity ebbs and flows, but it is always there and rarely is it because of true merit.
