when this financial debacle subsides, they execs will return to their playground once again. On the backs of the shareholders.
Alan Greenspan had a profound admission - the presumption that free market corporations would take care of their shareholders is, badly mistaken. Execs take care of themselves. Greed will re emerge, it is just lying low until the politicians back off....

I think humans as a whole are inherently good, but a small percentage will always be selfish and greedy and take whatever they are able to. Throughout all of history, there has and always will be a proletariat class. History shows there are have's and have nots.....the degree of disparity ebbs and flows, but it is always there and rarely is it because of true merit. Most often...genetic lottery determines one's position in 'society'.

Mansfield is sick.

agreed

in terms of terrain and natural snow, there is no equal in the eastern US. I can see how many people might like Sugerbush or Killington or wherever better in terms of 'ski' areas. I can understand how Jay fans appreciate more snow most years. I can see how the naturalist/extremist might have a more prominent place in their heart with Mt. Washington as it for certain has the most hardcore terrain. I can understand how some like the remoteness and vibe of Sugarloaf. I can see the draw for the Whiteface enthusiasts.

Mansfield is the pinnacle for me though. It reigns supreme in the number of deep snow days spent on outrageous terrain that can be had in a winter on the East Coast. All the development does indeed suck, but if you can just focus on true skiing.....there's none better than Mansfield.

Well said---it's Mani/the Notch, not Stowe/Smuggs---I'm a HUGE WF fan and always will be, but that said my best ski years were spent "using" Stowe/Smuggs to find the true heart and soul of eastern skiing that being Mani/Notch. IMHO, it really doesn't get any better than that.

You have a better opinion of human beings than I do. After graduating college, I was fairly idealistic and saw a more socialistic system as being good (not full on commy style mind you). I ultimately came to the conclusion that humans are too busy looking out for number one... without a financial investment and "something to loose at stake", most humans don't behave "inherently well". With investment and something to loose, people's behavior drastically improves. This is why expanding the middle class early last century was so important to the upper class and well to do. You give people a little bit better life and give them a stake in things... they will get in line instead of raising hell, unionizing, and complaining about work environments. Throw em' a bone and give them a stake and behavior improves.... but even then... we all do a lot of selfish things on a regular basis without care for others.

Any given person is generally a descent being, groups of people acting together unchecked will eventually become an opressive force, IMO.

I agree with you there...anyway do you think the bar at the new $400 million dollar hotel will serve PBR?

And therein lies the fundamental problem. It only takes a few to vastly screw up life for the many. Public and private.

As long as the masses are kept Fat , Dumb and Happy and DISENGAGED they behave like lemmings and believe damn near anything the ( socially - connected monied class) has to offer.

Cynical -- you bet

for those so inclined , Read Randy Collins book "the Credential Society"

Randy a U West Virginia sociologist wrote this in the early 80's and it is a rather insightful LOOK at HOW things really are socially stratified and what results . Things AIN"T always what they seem

A thin veil of lies hides the truth. I used to think people just didn't know. Now I realize they don't want to know. Easier just to watch sports and believe we stand for freedom and democracy.
