exactly. again, this site is a corner pub with like 30 regulars.

reddit and skiology are broadcast news in comparison and are far bigger problems. people can post pretty much anything in this forum and its reach is minimal

Apparently earlier this winter two college kids fell through the ice of Sterling Pond and nearly died after getting lost trying to retrace their steps:

Q1) Are there any resources that track the thickness/safety of the Sterling Pond ice ? Do Stowe and Smugglers Notch close their backcountry access points if the ice is too thin ? Before venturing out, I had confirmed from historical data that the mid-mountain temperature at Smugglers Notch had remained below freezing for more than 3 straight weeks, including some very cold stretches. So I felt fairly confident. However when I first got to the the edge of the pond, on my way to Stowe from Smugglers, there were no tracks heading directly across the pond, which made me a little nervous, so I skirted the shore around the peninsula until there were some tracks to follow across the remainder of the pond (yellow line in first image below).

Q2) What is name of formerly official trail going from Smugglers Notch to Stowe, marked in red in the first two images below ? In most maps I found (second and third images below) it is unnamed. Fourth image from Smugglers Y2K map seems to suggest that Snuffy’s is the name of both trails - to and from ?!?

In 1999-2000 Stowe map, trail to Smugglers is labeled Snuffy’s but trail from Smugglers is not named:

Both trails are named Snuffy’s on Smugglers Y2K map:

So I just finished a Happy and very-unhappy (3 days) doing a Upper VT trip. Did 2 days at Stowe & 1 at Jaypeak.

Sunday was a fantastic day till I lost "my" freaking phone on the last run at 4:00pm OMG. I am screwed on this one I think. SO much important stuff and its valuable that I cant afford to replace the level of phone. Into possible "20"+ inches of softening snow most likely.

Galaxy Note (6" x 3") phone in case
"Bright Metallic purple case housing a galaxy note"
(Sunrise glades to Birch glades) to toll road trail to edge of woods on toll road skiers right.

Even walked up toll house "lift line" with board(takes a hour walking in boots if wondering) after closing one time to try and find it. Stayed over till Monday to try again to find it again and the Freaking Toll house lift is closed on weekdays. Did a half run on glades to toll road and walked up 1/4 of the "last mile" trail again. It might in a "miracle" pop out in melting spring to a skier or hiker. I know the areas it is in for sure (Sunrise glades to Birch glades) to toll road trail to edge of woods on toll road skiers right.

I See that things have been a little fun here : ) I have done half the smugglers to Stowe and back as a "out and back" then dropped into "Birthday bowls" to return to Smugglers base "only" there is NO return to Stowe from the Birthday bowls but I like the loop look better.

Sorry Todd that sucks. Hopefully it turns up at some point and you can at least get the sim card or something.
Lost mine at Mount Snow a few weeks back and it took three runs to find and only found it because I happened to uncover it mid turn.

i lost my goggles and one glove on the same lift at jackson last month. some real jerry shit. it was my last run of the day, and the gloves were cheap (shoutout to Costco and the $15 head ski gloves - i buy like 4 pair at a time every few years). so i skied to the goggles immediately and didn't pursue the glove. but the next morning the glove was waiting for me at the lift shack. which was nice.

they sell these phone leash things that clip to your jacket. a friend sent me a link. i prefer to just not drop my phone. but the product exists.

Skied Stowe today. Things started very firm this morning, but finally by around 11am things started to soften up. I had never skied the Spruce side at all on any of my previous visits, so I finally managed to check that off the list today. Whirlaway and Upper Smugglers/Smugglers had really nice soft bumps and I very much enjoyed those type of trails. Back on the Manfield side Starr from S-53 was pretty nice early in the afternoon as well.
