Oh I see Mr Hoity Toity ski area critic.

It's open only if it meets your exacting standards of openness, eh?

Open is open to me.

Hardly. I should clarify. Open is open, but I certainly wouldn't bother skiing there. Also, the fact that they, at times in the past, claimed to "beat" Killington to an opening is silly. Not a fair comparison.

Here's a surprise...I look at it the complete opposite way.

Killington (or any other big resort) has ALL of the advantages of latitude, altitude, and attitude. They have the snowmaking infrastructure and the skier base to get people out there. They have a total unfair advantage.

But 2 out of the last 3 years Little Woodbury beat them to it. A little place that thinks big. Kudos to them.

And I'll bet you would go there if the PR guy told you they would seed a bump run.

I see where you're coming from. And if they seed a run? Of course I would go there! ;)

The first day a ski area opens..if it's warm outside..all the traffic on one or two runs turns anything blue square or steeper into a bump run by early afternoon..

Yes, but the difference is that Hunter isn't going to groom it unless it becomes a real icy mess, or unless they're blowing more snow on it.

I think Sugarloaf stands to gain THE MOST out of any area if they are the first to open, especially if it significantly before other areas.

They are so far away, they need to do whatever they can to get people there to experience it. Once you go there, you feel like you have to go back because of how impressive the mountain is. What better way to do this when you don't have any competition and are guaranteed the diehards, many of whom may have never been there.

This is a great point...and from this angle it makes perfect sense for Sugarloaf.

You don't have to recoup the early season investment all at once...return visits are a plus.

Considering the mouse blowing out sessions at REAL ski areas cover more terrain with greater depth (and more skiers actually show up) every year BEFORE Woodbury claims to be "open", my vote is for no, Woodbury does not count. If you're counting Woodbury, you're going to have to count people sliding on piles of snow left behind hockey stadiums by Zambonies, in which case everyone has already been beat by the local kids here.

You know what, I think someone is gonna blow some snow on something REAL soon. As in, I keep expecting there to be word on here of someone blowing snow every time I check in here. I suspect it may be a snowmaking test at the loaf to see if the new pump is up to snuff, especially if they plan to open October 26. When you step back and look at the calander, if they want to do the 26, they need to start blowing snow like they mean it (if they get a window) in just 2 weeks time!

As a 19 year old UMaine Farmington sophomore, I skied Sugarloaf in October 97...I believe it was October 21 or 22. You uploaded on the short side double above boardwalk, and one of the spillway doubles was running...I think it was short side. Spillyway was open, and towards the bottom not even the entire width was covered.

To get back down bottom, you just walked down grassy boardwalk. I remember a red pickup truck giving other people rides to the bottom and up to the spillway chair. I think Fox 51 news was there as well.

Those were the days...
