i dont necessarily think sun valley will appeal to my skiing style, but i do consider it to be a destination i should visit as a well rounded well traveled skier, so its on the agenda.

as of now next winter is looking like ~5 days in the SLC region between xmas and new years, and then a big trip in late feb early march that will fly thru SLC and hit jackson, sun valley, powmow, and snowbasin

Mostly just joking in this case.

But, things could have changed in those intervening years. So the earlier comments in the thread might be entirely misleading. And as someone who had responded 6 years ago, I may contradict my earlier comments...

Of the several places I skied 5-10 years ago as "extremely quiet, powder last for days", once they joined the mega pass list, that changed. Sun Valley will be one of such. How much of a change? I haven't been there since. So my earlier comments could potentially be entirely wrong. Or still perfectly applicable!

It's just too confusing to comment on such an old thread.

Would it matter if I posted a new thread?
I just did some quick searching that produced this thead that had some info in it and bumped it to see if it caught a new eye. Seemed to make sense to not have 2 threads with the same title.

We are looking at planning a trip with my wife son and daughter in-law. The skiing sounds perfect for the group, (my DiL has only been skiing a few years). all are IKON pass holders.
We are looking for a Air BNB 2 bedroom condo. any advice on convenient places to stay near or stay away from?
Doesn't look like thy have much Ski in ski out stuff but it sounds like most places have shuttle services?
Any reason to rent a car if we fly straight in?
Are we better off flying into SLC and renting an SUV?
Any must do stuff like restaurants, apre spots or side trips?

TIA
I have only visited Sun Valley in the summer but it’s an awesome place. As said, very laid-back. It is getting re-discovered though and I imagine now with it being on the Ikon Pass traffic will increase as well prices. As you said, a lot of lodging is not Trailside. You’ll see that most of the development is over on the other side of the valley. The ski area (or Bald Mountain) is easy to get to from the town but from the Sun Valley village itself it’s a little bit of a drive.

Surprisingly, it does not get a lot of snow. That’s why it’s called Sun Valley and not Snow Valley. My buddy went up there last month for an extended weekend ski vacation. He enjoyed the groomers but said it really needed new snow. The terrain has great pitch. A lot of good steep cruising terrain. The next question I guess would be what kind of terrain you like to ski.

You have probably already seen it but there are actually two ski areas. The smaller area over near Sun Valley Village is called Dollar Mountain. It’s got something like 400 or 500 vertical feet and is pretty much an open mountainside for beginner and intermediate skiing. If you do go, be sure to go check out the remains of one of the original Sun Valley chairliffs that has been preserved. It’s just north and east of the Sun Valley village. It’s kind of tucked in between two houses. It is a National historical site.

Overall though lots of history and a really cool area.

It may be worth flying into Salt Lake City and renting a vehicle to drive up there. On a good day you can get to Sun Valley from Salt Lake in about 4 1/2 hours. That said, the weather between here and there can get pretty bad. The stretch between Interstate 15 and Twin Falls can have some really nasty weather. The airport in Sun Valley is actually about 10 miles south of Sun Valley proper. Depending upon where you stay you may want a car.

Ask WineGuy, his brother lives there and he frequents every winter. A long time ago they lodged us in Ketchum when we overnighted in Hailey. Pioneer Saloon is a must hit apres/dinner spot. Laid back western theme but you'll rub elbows at the bar with A-Listers.
