I usually start skiing slower and take is easy and figure I'll end the day with some relaxed cruiser runs. Then I start feeling better, and end up right back in the bumps or trees to end the day.

The first sign I see of my tips starting to criss-cross, it generally means my legs have had it, and it's apres time.

I gave up on tuesday after skiing five top to bottom runs + 5 runs in the glades. Waking up at 5:30am and driving 336 miles round trip, 1/2 of it in heavy fog, was a bit tiring in itself.

so you dont ever start to think about preservation? tired legs make for sloppy skiing which can increase the injury risk. not can, it does. I always start thinking about that when i get tired. almost a risk/reward type scenario.

My attitude has changed as I've aged. I used to be out there first to last lift, minimal time inside. As my old bones age, I'm much slower to get started, but do tend to stay out the whole day after that. For me, part of skiing is just being out-of-doors in the winter. Part of my inner core needs to be outside. So if I'm fatigued, I just slow down, mellow out, do something simple. Sometimes I'll just sit on top for a few minutes.

It gets to be an issue since later in the days when I'm done with blacks, the nice blue trails are all tracked out and iced up, so I tend to wander back into some real mellow woods and just enjoy nature.

I have a friend who sees skiing as his outlet for exercise, so he runs full tilt until he can't take anymore. That's not my style though.

By the time I get back to the lodge, usually well past the last lift, they're closing up the place, but I've had a good day and nobody got hurt. 8)

I'll typically quit when I feel my turns are getting lazy, especially on a powder day in the woods.

I didn't get sore from my skiing on Sunday but I did bang my big toenail when I got some air which I'll most likely lose. I tend to be an early bird and like to get out first thing for fresh powder or fresh cordoroy..I like to ski nonstop..and once I start feeling less than about 70%..I usually call it a day..I think of it like playing poker or gambling..you need to quit while you're ahead and cash in your chips for another day. When it's early in the season and around 2-3PM the light gets really flat and everything is in a shadow..that's a good time to quit..

yup, you landed in the backseat on that couch drop...probably what cost you the toe nail!

when my legs are so spent that I can't extend after absorbing a bump/roller/end of the turn...then I know its quitso time. Early season that's after a dozen runs, by Jan its usually pretty close to 4pm. I love the warm fuzzy feeling of spent quads...windburn on the face...good stuff

If I know that I have a long drive home ahead of me (like over 2 hours) then I may consider playing it a bit more conservatively and quit a bit earlier, but not always.

After having 2 big injuries last winter, I've learned to just listen to when my body says it's over and quit while I'm ahead. That meant, in the spring, quitting at Mt. Snow after only 3 runs. It was a bad day and I knew by my performance that I was risking injury, so I stopped. I'd rather stop early and ski another day than be down for the count for a season.
Left myself wide open for that one. Way to grab that low hanging fruit...
oh god i couldnt type fast enough.
Stop grabbing my husband's fruit!

that's when you give her the keys to the car and say see ya when i see ya.

no way, i would never date a chick that would want me to cut my day short because she was tired.

if i got tired first i would not want her to cut her day short.

it's a mutual thing. lucky i have someone that loves to ride as much as i do.

I gotcha. I wouldn't expect to cut anybody's day short because mine was over. I've had no problem with heading into the lodge/lounge when I was done so others could continue their fun.
