Not able to read the article,… what’s going on?
They're trying to create a foundation and raise $1.5m to continue after a break. Sorry, article is at the Burlington Free Press but I'm overseas and view an EU edition, hence the bad link. Maybe try the same url but without the EU prefix.

Why does Sugarbush and other ski resorts open beginner terrain first? I would imagine most early season skiers are advanced. Is it because the beginner trails do not take as much snow to open or do resorts like to say "Where open a week before Thanksgiving on terrain advance skiers don't care about."

Experts can ski on easy terrain. Beginners can't ski on expert terrain. So more people can actually get out there and enjoy it. Besides, experts also need to get themselves reacclimated to skiing too. I certainly don't want to ski the blacks on my first day back on the mountain.

It's easier to make and groom snow on beginner terrain too.

I had a feeling this was coming all the way back to last winter when we were in there. It's happening all over VT. Not enough employees, not enough business. Sad for sure.
I don't think "not enough business" in general is accurate. Plenty of business at new places like Madbush and nelly's, not to mention Mad taco and Canteen.
IMHO Big picture had some operational issues which led to a decline in its popularity and Lawson's took away the apres crowd. The kitchen there is tiny so they cut down on the menu options years ago and that made it less enticing.
Only natural for there to be turnover in businesses especially restaurants.

A minute from the Alta exit off the I-15!

Adding that opening weekend conditions would be miserable on a steep run. Death cookies and ice from wet snowmaking pushed out with zero dry time isn't fun to ski on easy slopes, would be crap skiing on a steep.

Upper Downdraft is super fun to ski at Killington early season if the op is looking for that kinda thing. Legitimately steep and rarely (if ever) groomed early season.

Trivia question: what run at Snowbird is usually the first to open early season? You might be surprised.

I know I posted this a year or so ago but I’ll be wondering again soon why Sugarbush Ops never wants to give Hot Shot/Waterfall some early season love. True expert terrain absolutely not, but it would spread the crowds out on Gate House while they take their time building out Gadd Peak / HG. That trail really doesn’t need a lot of snow to be skiable and is a short one to cover since it follows a straight line. I assume the main negative is that it lacks fixed tower guns and isnt the best place to make productive early season snow, especially with chairs in the way, but seems like that isn’t a problem for Killington on Rime (although the NR4 doesn’t go right up the middle of Rime either).

If it's not Big Emma, I'm surprised. I do not know.
Regulator Johnson from the top of the mountain. And as you said it can be a sheet of ice, death cookies, or both on Opening Day. Admittedly, it is a favorite of mine, but last season on Opening Day it was a sheet of ice on the first run.

I use to love the days Organgrinder, Jester & Deathspout. Sometimes ski spillsville on 6" of snow

Making snow up high given temps.

Given marginal, likely elevation dependent snowmaking windows, do they have a plan B for thanksgiving? In other words, summit of Ellen? Or would they actually not open with that even if it meant not opening at all?

Nice to see guns on. Still amazed, though, that tower guns pointed far too high into the wind are even turned on. Not a flake landing on the trail in some places (around Allyn's and below it on Dspout

I visited Sugarbush's website this morning and noticed a promotion for Paradise including menus, hours, etc. I am assuming that means they did buy it. Did they build employee housing behind it? What is the status of the Sugarbush Inn this winter?

Yes Sugarbush purchased Paradise.
I think employee housing is still In plans but not started yet. If I’m not mistaken it’ll be across the street from Paradise somewhere.
I don’t know the status of Sugarbush Inn this winter.
