VB You are doing Evan a huge favor by posting data for us re: The Whale. The word needs to be spread.

Evan has his hands full. The weather this year sux for all ski areas.

I agree. More out there, the better.

Especially in venues such as this one

well on saterday last week I dislocated my right arm :x Not really sure when Ill be able to ski again, or even drive. They took 10 to 15 minutes putting it back in, with no pain killers, so right now its a bit sore. Hope to be out of the sling by 3 weeks tops, but i still have to see the doc about that :-?

I got into a snow bike accident, was going a bit too fast on Ivory, and went over the edge of the trail and rammed all my weight onto my right sholder. not the first time ive done this either. First time it was my left arm(lefty) falling off a horse.

its been good. the place is busy almost every day of the week, and the different events that take place at whaleback bring in even more buissness, which is great. I haven't been there since last saterday because i can't drive, but basicly there has been a good ski school flow of kids and adults.

My personal feeling is that Evan and his crew at Whaleback have a very full plate and as a result I think they need a free-pass on some of the things that are being discussed here...

Should they be doing a better job of spreading the word - sure. Is it the priority - not yet. My feeling is they are taking a walk-before-you-run approach. Get the operations working and then tell the masses to get their @sses over there....

dl,

That's big-hearted of you, but you have the history wrong. Whaleback has already done a whale of a job "spreading the word" and talking to "the masses." And that's the primary cause of the disappointment evident in this discussion thread. Our expectations were raised high, then brought low.

Dybvig used his Olympic and World Cup status to get tremendous, statewide, industry-wide, print and TV coverage of what he suggested would be the 05/06 birth of an "action sports" meca. Through all of this spring, summer and fall talk, there was no mention of a "walk-before-you-run" approach, and no talk of first opening as just a locals' place to make a few turns. Dybvig told the world that there'd be a radical freestyle, snowboarding and skating center sitting next to I89 this season. And there isn't.

Now we suspect Dybvig was biting off more than he could handle and, yes, we can imagine his difficulties. People have a right, though, to be frustrated with the disingenuous PR.

to answer snowmakers questions first, yes they have been open for night skiing since they opened up in december, and he trail count I belive right now is around 8. They are definatly going to do there best opening as many trails as possible, but remember it is a small mountain, and at 40% open(as of yesterday), thats pretty darn good.

To comment on HDHaller, its true, Evan did give a big impresssion on whats happening this year, but to my knowledge, he never gave a timeline of when it will happen, except for the opening of the mountain for the winter. All of the mountains efforts right now are centered around the winter sports right now, even though they are ready in some areas for the next step. What it all boils down to is time, and money. once spring rolls around, things will happen fast, for the skate park, and the other sports that are going to take place year round.

Well, the first Zero Gravity camp is over with, and for the most part it went without too much of a problem. there were one or two injuries througout mon-sat, other than that the camp went great. I mainly taught the morning session, the two hour ski lesson, level green. Then there was the second session of three choices that the kids could do in the afternoon. I wasn't able to participate in the second session because of my injury two weeks ago, so I did regular lessons in the afternoon. I think that for a first time ever, that the camp went great, there will be regular sessions every saterday and sunday untill the mountain closes, for anyone interested, between the ages 6-12, to participate in Big air, Moguls, Racing, and rail learning, plus lessons for kids who want to eventually do those things, who just need some lesson time for a while.

If anyone is interested in signing up for The next Zero gravity camp next week, just call the mountain, or e-mail Frank, or stop on by to pick a form up. Whaleback needs all the kids they can get for this awsome program.

So the lodge will be open for the park I imagine? Not a good liability thing to have a closed ski area with "an open" terrain park. I imagine they will charge admission/control access somehow.
