trailboss, didn't your read VB's report from today?

I did. But you obviously did not read my whole quote. In the soundbite, you took it out of context:

Nope, have not been.

No report on SnoCountry  As far as I knew, they weren't open this weekend.

My point was this: there was NO report available on SnoCountry and that was the only info I had on hand regarding Whaleback since their website is not updated. My POV was of a customer who was interested in the place: I go onto SnoCountry and scan the reports...Whaleback is listed as "not having any current info" and I surmise, "hmm, must be closed."

well, Im telling u that they are open, and going strong. Even after the rain on saterday, the trails were still in mostly good shape, mostly because of he foot of snow the night before, plus the snow making that they've been doing. They plan on keeping open all season and not close at all. They are opening up a skate park some time this summer or sunner though too, plus other activites, so they tecnicallly wont close all year. :D

Foot of snow??? Huh? Saturday night we might have gotten 5 inches or so here in Wilder, but not a foot. Are you referring to snowmaking?

I want them to do well...just remind your manager to keep posting reports on SnoCountry. There are a lot of people who rely on that service.

Right now, there are 6 trails, i belive open. It rained last nigth, but it might just make them a bit icy. Tuseday was great conditiopns on all the trails. Im working tonight and tomarrow night, so I might be a while before I get on again, unless I get exxtra time in my classes.

VB,

Thanks for providing us with the Whaleback info. A bit of friendly advice from an older guy: you should proofread and edit your posts before submitting.

Writing more carefully will be good for you, a high school student; and better writing will send a more effective PR message for Whaleback. Just a suggestion.

In all fairness I think that VB here is 15 or 16 years old. Just FYI.

Drove by tonight and the place was lit up and lots of snowmaking and grooming going on. Some skiers and riders, but not too many. Storr's Hill was going as well. It was sad to see the old Highlands from Franklin--that was a big place--on the scale of Pats Peak or so. I heard on NELSAP that it will be reopening as a bike hill first and then maybe skiing someday. We can hope.

So the whale was blowing tonight...looked good.

well because of my internet screwing up, I copied the whole post to my clipboard...problem solved:

staying out of this one, so anyway, why is everyone so interested in this whaleback. This mountain doesnt seem to merit 4 pages of posts.

I mean, c'mon you figured out that skating is an "in" thing, when you gonna realise that the internet is too. I don't care about fancy neon light home page that look more like a club ad, I wanna see some dude shredding a rail (well, other people do, I don;t like parks) and the mountain stats.

hey man, keep up with the instructing. more Young blood, I'm getting tired of being the only one under 30 who does it for more then the seasons pass(I guess not the only one).

NYDrew, I've described my strong feelings for Whaleback here and on the NELSAP board to the point where people are probably sick of hearing.

It depends what you like. Do you like inexpensive throwback areas with no crowds, modest vertical, and no high capacity lifts?

That's exactly what Whaleback used to be for me. When it went out of business, it left a void. I'm hoping it can get some serious natural snow and then I'll see if it still offers what I'm craving.

Just to clear something up, Im 17, Junior in High school. I am sorry for my bad spelling and grammer, but when i type fast, thats exactly what happens, and the smallest amount of time on this site at school, the less likly I will get caught on here.

Whaleback to me is a place where you can stay away from the long lines, and rude people that think they can ski. You get that at whaleback a little, but not nearly as much as say Sunapee or Ascutney.

Hopefully tomarrow we will get just snow, not the R word or sleet. that way the skiing at whaleback will get even better!! :)

I know what you are trying to say but Sunapee and Ascutney are two not so good examples. I have never been in a line at ascutney for more than 2 minutes, even on the busiest weekend. I've also heard the same about Sunapee for the most part. (Trailboss will help me out on that info, wink wink). Whaleback is a good mountain if you live in close proximity to it. The point is so are Sunapee and Ascutney, and I guess what it comes down to is personal opinion and what each offers for the individual. One man's trash is another man's treasure type of deal. Some love one mountain while others have nothing but bad things to say about the same mountain.

VB, did you ski Whaleback before it closed in 2001? I'd be interested in your thoughts of how the new operation compares to the old one.

TwinTips21, I've waited in weekend lines at Sunapee. On a nice weekend, it's no fun. Well I guess it's fun for some people. But I stick to weekdays at Sunapee.

Having another ski area in this region is not a bad thing IMHO. I think that there is a niche for the Whale and I really hope that the crew makes it a go. Kids need this kind of place to go.

I just worry that they are doing some things that are hurting them (i.e. not posting regular snow reports, not maintaining a website, not blowing enough snow, etc). They are getting more attention than 10e that's for sure...and that place is being run much worse now IMHO.

We're all armchair resort operators I guess!

Yes, obviously Whaleback's operators have a lot of improvements to make as they take on this new venture of owning and operating a ski area. They're less than one month into their first ski season of their first owner-operated ski area. If the reports are correct, the locals are supporting Whaleback with their business. If that keeps up, I'm sure the new owners can catch up and attend to some important things like updating their web site and reporting to Snocountry.

Regarding your 10e comment... In 2003, Tenney had more than their fair share of press for their SnowMagic system.
