After reading the GWB thread, I got to thinking what's the best route for me to take to Stowe? (I didn't want to thread-jack that thread)

My GPS wants to take NY Throughway into Albany, then 787 to Route 7 into Rutland, then take Route 4 to I-89...I'm not so thrilled with this route.

Google presents two options.
#1 GWB to I-87 -> CT-15 -> I-91 -> I-89 (Link to map). GWB might not be a problem at 10AM on a Sunday.
#2 I-87 all the way to Lake Champlain, then take the ferry over into Burlington to I-89 (Link to map)

I could avoid the GWB, and basically take the same route as #1 taking the TZB (Link to map)

Lastly, Tappen Zee to I-684 -> I-84 into Hartford (which is a route I'm actually familiar with).

What do you think AZ?

GPS's don't do well in rural NY/ Vermont, yours is no exception. Don't know anything about the bridge thing on your end but I91 to I89 is a good route. Only 15 miles on two lanes from Waterbury to Stowe. The I87 to the ferry is just plain silly and the Rt 7 to Rutland to Rt 4 is just as bad.

I typically take the route your GPS suggests, unless I want a more scenic route in which case, I'll take RT100 from Killington.
To Killington, yes. Sometimes though, I like to go through Fort Ann since I used to go camping off Buttermilk Falls Road.

6 of one, half a dozen of the other. All the same time wise.So instead of doing the 787 rt, You just continue on 87 to exit 20 on the Northway. Once in Rutland, the same holds true.

Root, i live next door in murray hill. i normally take the lake champlain bridge via crown point, but i heard they just demolished it this morning. with that option out, i would take whitehall/fort ann option. no matter what time of the day, i don't go near GWB/95.

I can't really speak for the VT side of things, but I drive up to NH about 15+ times a year, and I always avoid NYC. Tappan Zee Bridge > 684 > 84 is the way to get to New England from the NYC area. My initial impression would be to take 91 from there, but I don't have much experience with that.

on a second thought, 87>84>91>89 doesn't look too bad either

I would suggest Tappan Zee Bridge to 684 instead of taking the Thruway straight to 84. It cuts out about 10 miles. While it does depend on what you drive through, I've found that when I typically end up driving through (3-4pm on Fri), the heaviest traffic is heading the other direction, out of the city.

I think I'm liking TZB > 684 > 84 > 91 > 89. I know the route up through Hartford well. For the scenic route, I cut out a section of 684 and ride the Saw Mill to near Brewster.

Root:

Best route from I-80/I-287 Jct:

I-287 North to Thruway I-87 North

Thruway to exit 24 (I-87 Northway)

I-87 north to exit 20.

149 East to Route 4 east.

Route 4 east to 22-A North

22-A North to 7 North.

7 North to I-189 East.

I-189 (the shortest interstate ever) to I-89 south to Waterbury/Stowe Exit.

Saw Mill Pkwy may be scenic, but there are stop lights. I wasn't expecting anything like that (because I it's a Parkway!), and I came around a corner doing 65 and just saw bright red in front of me.

That's part of the fun of taking the Saw Mill.
