Reporting (via syndication) half their trails open, while just about everyone else is reporting nearly everything open. They don't even have a web site "snow report" page in operation. I smell a rat. Insights?

Holy crap. Spear still closed? Ski down the glades then hike up from the exit on Spear side. Talk about a secret stash of powder, jeez.

I was thinking the same thing. not too bad of a hike either.

Disappointed with their state of affairs. Talked to their reps at the Ski Show and they said they were going to be competing hard with everyone around or below them (Pats, Gun, Suny)...

Well, with only having the main mountain open, they definitely are far short of their expectations.

I personally like the place with some interesting trails, but the last few years - especially with this abundance of early snow is very disappointing.

Tough year for these mid-sized I-93 mountains. Both Tenney and Ragged both have lifts down and a lot of terrain not open during one of the biggest December's ever and probably a very big vacation crowd during school break. Not a good time to have less than 100% operation.

I was pleasantly surprised by the conditions and facilities at Ragged.. despite the closed lift there was plenty to explore including some nice glades. The 6 pack is a very high cap lift and there's enough terrain off of it to disperse the crowd.

So we got a mtn offering LESS than full service -- Question ---Do their Lift Tix rates reflect that ? :D

The website says "Mid week rates until further notice", so on the weekend, yes, you're getting a discount, but not during the week it would seem.

Just go.. The spear side remains closed, but the 6 is running and with all this snow it should be great.

I agree, the place is still good even when spear is closed. The latest report has the natural trail and glade open in the ravine section. That ravine does a nice job of protecting the snow. Then they have the raggea glades which has tame pitch with widely space trees, early in the season, its a good place for skiers who want to get better in the glades. After a good dump, they have baby bumps, by mid season, it gets interesting .

I just purchased two lift tickets for my son and I on Liftopia for Ragged tomorrow. I have never been there before so this will be a new experience for father and son alike.

Warren is uninterested in spending alot of time in the car this weekend for another Saddleback/Sugarloaf trip and this redhead that say's she is my wife would like to see me when we return.

Sweepstakes is the natural trail, the beginning section is steep (for a short length), narrow and twisty, it usually gets bumpy. If you get past that and into the mid section check out the mini ledges on skiers right.... double fall lines.

Might want to try birches, about the same steepness as sweepstakes but its usually groomed.

The glade in the ravine is also steep at the beginning but tapers off, given the weather, they must have stashes left.

If any one like a short and fun steep trail, try headwall.

copy-paste from a ragged employee posting at snowjournal. ignore his bad english. in italics is a post from someone on sj which ragged employee replied to.
ragged employee said:
1) 6 Pack
They are having trouble with the 6 pack because there is no one on staff that understands detachable lifts. There are sensors on each pole that measure the spacing between the chairs and Ragged is having difficulty getting it right. The 6 pack has been operating inconsistently this season and was closed for a portion of this weekend.
This is absolute crap sorry, the reason the lift was closed for the weekend was wind just the same as all the other mountains around here. there are no sensors on towers checking the spacing, absolute bullshit
Spear Mountain lift has at least 21 more days of work left to be done.
Again completely untrue
We have chairs back on spear now we need to do line work then a load test and we are away.
There were more trails which could have opened but were not opened. The patrollers skied them but they remained closed.
Who ever told you this is blatantly lying.
Today we opened lower ridge, Raggae glades,
Birches and Sweepstakes upper crewcut.
We are trying to have beginner terrain open this weekend.
Here's the deal
Barnyard needs to be finished (linework) and load tested
You guys really need to understand that since we got brought in July we have rewired every lift. This alone was a huge undertaking and would not have happened with out great support from our contractors.
Village green needs to have brake parts installed to be open. We have ordered parts and we are waiting for then to arrive
The wondercarpet was only installed last week so we will inspect that this week
Snowmaking
All the work has been completed but we are still trying to fine tune the pump house. We really never got a chance to test the system so we are still finding a few issues (splits in the line mainly) but we are working through this. I can tell you fellas right now that we have blown more snow here this season than the last two maybe three combined.
I am however really thrilled that there is so much interest in Ragged so far this season. I hope that you all are wishing us well in our endeavors. Knowing first hand all the work that has gone on here so far, I am proud of what we have achieved
Please excuse my spelling. If any of you have any reason to not believe what I am saying please drop me a PM and I will have tickets waiting for you at customer service so long as you take some runs with me.

Looking at their trailmap, they have everything open which is lift serviced, except for the trails that go over the backside of the mtn (shouldn't even be on the trailmap) and the trails which dump out onto easy winder. IMO, easy winder was a mistake. It's way too flat in some places, and will cripple any terrain in the Big Rock Basin unless a new lift is put in.

Once they get spear opened, they'll be close to 100%. One opinion is that the management is just using this season to get their feet under them and is hoping to break even. They're not pushing snowmaking or anything until they know for sure how their system works and are confident in it. Personally I wish them good luck and will be there during February vacation.

Is this the type of place to be crowded on the weekend?

Some times back, when the prev owners operated it, they would schedule any type of race event for the weekend. The six pack does a good job of dissapating the crowds. If you stay in the ravine, you will avoid the crowds. The blue glade (raggea) off the triple is ok.

Oh yeah, if your son is old enuf go on the single line and meet up at top, it's rare that they get six in a group.

New operation trying to clean up the mess that the previous owners left...I hear that Bob Fries, who is the manager, is a stand-up guy.
