Thats that point I was trying to make, as the technology has changed the definition of carving has changed, well at least for me I don't know how the rest of you feel.

you're on your own here...I learned how to carve on a 216 downhill ski and spent a few years doing it on 207 GS skis before the first "carving skis" hit the market...full on RR tracks...takes a lot of hill and a lot of speed since its a longer radius turn, but you can make a true carved turn on a straight ski...just takes space, speed and skill.

back in the old days our skis were 62,60,62 for GS in a 207 and the turn radius was 1 to 2 football fields :lol:

heck, I hadn't even paid much attention to the term radius until a few years ago. the two seasons I raced in high school in the early 90's I don't recall it even mattering. It was either a GS or SL ski and that was that. Well, the hardcore racers on the team had SuperG and DH boards. Me? I did everything I could to blow off practice and ski bumps on my 207 Rossi 4G's :lol:

Ooh, late 80's/early 90's Rossi's now those were fun skis!

Back in the late 80's, and then the early 90's, I found my 207 Rossi 4S's and then the 7S's to be real versatile, and especially in what at the time would be considered a "turny" GS course (practically a Super G by todays standard ) to click into my slalom boards over my GS boards, atleast up until the 2nd 1/2 of my college career where I fell in love with my Rossi 7G's! Those purple and gray boards ruled, even if they were a "whimpy" 208cm

uh from what i remember of the good old days the reason we were skiing those lengths was maximize the length of edge contact with the snow as the ski flexed. the tips and tails would lose contact and start to slip through the turns. i gotta say i don't remember too many people carving in the same sense that we see today...

Wuss, I was skiing a 212 Salomon 1S. Very nimble for a 212 GS ski.

thats really funny so at stowe or whiteface you get four real carved turns before you hit the lift.

I'm a wimp..the longest non-shaped skis I ever had were my Pre-m5a's which were a 195...and then when the tip delaminated I got them replaced with Pre-m6as..made in Park City Utah.

In my Freshman year of college I demoed a pair of K2 4's in the longest length they made..198s..which I thought totally rocked..and I ended up buying the K2 El Caminos in that length which were essentially the same skis except steezier graphics and no chip...198s are long ass'd shaped skis fo shizzle..then the next year I bought some K2 Kreitlers in a 193..and ended up working my way all the way down to 176 Elan S12s a few years ago and 170 length Atomic race skis..now my ski quiver is starting to get longer again.

Back when I skied straight skis..I don't think I was really carving..
