I agree with you, but as you know, skiing preferences are highly personal. Remember Loafer89? He lived in CT, but would head to Sugarloaf or Saddleback over VT areas despite often a 2 hour further drive time from VTs best. BobR skis Sunday River. From his home, Sugarbush and Stowe are the same drive as Sunday River, probably a bit easier actually, yet his preference is for the River.

Sunday River might not be for everyone, but it's pretty amazing that they're probably the second most popular ski destination in the East behind Killington and don't have the NY market to draw from. When thinking about that, I wouldn't be surprised if Sunday River was the most popular area in the East if it were more centrally located.
I ain't knocking the River! Just trying to offer suggestions that make the most sense for the OP...

As someone else coming from NJ, I agree with the Sugarbush recommendations. The mountain has something for everyone (though the better/harder natural stuff may be questionable at that time), is never crowded relative to Killington and is relatively cheap to stay at. We can make it in just above 5 hours if all goes well. Stowe is close enough if you want to go there for a day trip and MRG is right around the corner. It's far enough North and high enough that it can get blasted with snow while others are getting rain. Of course, it's still the NE so rain and 60* weather are always possible. I'd love to try Sunday River and Jay but once I'm getting to those drive times I'm thinking Utah or JH.
