We do our yearly "Rat Pack reunion" (see tag line below) at MRG. Basically it's guys who skied together in the '80's/'90's. This will be the 9th year. My bud is on patrol there and we crash his pad for the weekend. The bad part is that when our schedule conflicts with the NATO weekend we head over to the 'Bush because of the crowds. It's tough to get everyone on the same page, but we try our best to get everyone up there. Always a great time!

I'll probablly try to hit it this year.... I have yet to be a big MRG fan... although to be fair the few times I've been there were really not great days as far as conditions. I would love to catch it on a good day. For the life of me though... I still can't understand the mentality of why they stuck with the single chair.

MRG is a place where you simply have to pick a good day. Plenty of info online and even their snow report is pretty honest so there really shouldn't be many surprises.

The Single is one of MRG's claim to fame. Also, limiting uphill capacity aids in snow preservation. I'm sure the coop had many reasons to refurb it.

Yeah, I understand the tradition of the single chair... but really... the concept is SO outdated... IMO it was pretty silly to cling onto it when it came time to replace the lift.

I'm not saying they should have put in a super quad or anything... but at least a regular double chair would have been nice. It would have reduced the lift line and really I don't think the little bit of added capacity would have affected the snow preservation up there...and really... it is nice to be able to shoot the $h!t with your buddy when you are going up the lift.

In truth, I have not been there enought to know if a lift line is a big issue on the single chair... although the line was pretty hefty the couple of times I've been there.

Anyway, I really do want to hit it on a good day this winter... the terrain is really really good.

You can still BS with your buddy on the chair, you just need to talk a little louder.

I, for one, would have been really disappointed if they got rid of the single. I don't really see a reason to 'upgrade' to a double, so why do it. You wouldn't increase the capacity by a 'little bit' you'd effectively double it, unless you had really far chair spacing, then lift lines would still be the same. I dare say that doubling the uphill capacity would drastically change the skiing experience.

If you really want to ride a double they have one of those too, it just doesn't go up quite as high.

You know... it isn't like skiing is bad more often than it is good at Mad River. The notion that you "need to pick a good day" does not match my experiences with the mountain. Any mountain sucks after a rain freeze event and obviously you don't have groomers to fall back on at Mad River. But I think the picking a good day notion is over played a bit much. Not to mention... on "average" days, the Single line doesn't back up quite as much.

I think you just gotta pick a mid-week day either way and you're set :D

On most weekends, the Single line starts early and never stops. If every chair goes up and the lift is running at capacity on a typical weekend, a double chair would be just under twice as many people onto the hill assuming it still runs at capacity. This would definitely impact snow preservation and quality. If you ski mid-week, it isn't much of a big deal as it doesn't get to capacity often unless it is a powder day, and then it is all about snow preservation. Besides, Mad River already has a double chair. Who needs two of those?

I not only supported the Single Chair decision in principle, I put my money where my mouth was and supported it financially. Mad River went with a Single instead of a Double because a majority of people that love the mountain appreciate the Chair for what it is. Snow preservation and uncrowded trails aside, the real reason the Single carries on is that it gives most of its passengers a warm fuzzy feeling when they step up and have a solitary journey up the mountain. Its one of many reasons that keeps me and many other like minded skiers coming back. Why fix it if it isn't broken?

I hear ya. I've only skied MRG a handful of times, but I've had good to excellent conditions (as expected) each time. Like you said, you can't go soon after a thaw/freeze and then be disappointed with the conditions.

But with all that said... if you can hit up Mad River on a great day... you are certainly in for a treat!!!!
