I would recommend that you rent boots for you son instead of purchasing a new pair. Kids outgrow their shoes so fast that it is not worth it to spend a lot of money on them. The same goes for ski boots.
We rented ski boots for the season for both my son and daughter and it worked out well. This way if their foot grows midseason you can go back to the shop and get the next size up for them.
Thanks for the advice...I bought my son's equipment with a 50% credit deal, so it may be better costwise to just buy a new pair of boots.

How much does a season boot rental go for? Are there any places near the Nashua - Salem NH area that rent just boots?

So, my skiing will improve with my footbeds?

Without question, and I rarely say that about a piece of equipment.

After you get those footbeds and make a few turns with them, I guarantee you will not be able to comprehend how you got by without them!

Skiing will take on a whole new direction, you will reach for things you never felt capable of before...in a way, I envy you because that burst of enlightenment can be almost orgasmic.

Well Jim, you just got me stoked for next season.... I mean really stoked. Now how am I supposed to survive the next 5 months?
Planning to go up to K for Columbus Day weekend so I guess I'll bring my boots up there then. Folks tell me there's a great boot fitter at The Basin (I think it's the Basin -- Ty, or anyone else, can you confirm?).

I don't remember the exact amount we paid but I would say it was around $80 for the season. We rented ours at Peak Performance in Killington.

I need new skis this year- boots are one season new, so they're great, but I've totally outgrown my skis. Now to decide what to get, and how to not pay too much for them.
I demo'd a set of Volkl 724's for a half day at Sunappe- absolutely loved them, then switched to Bandit B2's, and hated them. Just can't see dropping $600 on the Volkls (though I'd really, really like to).

What do season rentals on good skis go for, and is it possible to switch them out if you don't like what you got?
