Why I’ve Decided to Stop Counting

I do count the days I'm skiing, but the counting has never influenced my decision of going/ not going. I'm not "chasing" the number of days, I'm just trying to go skiing as often as I can and I like to. If I don't feel like going (which doesn't happen often but it does) - that's perfectly fine. My counting is more like an afterwards summary, rather than a goal that I've set for myself. I'm still quite new to the sport and I can't get enough, but I've noticed that I am now shifting more towards quality over quantity approach.

Nothing wrong with counting as long as it doesn't become your priority. We're all there to enjoy the snow and make the most of it :)

Sounds like a real problem.... Maybe if you used your toes, too, it would help.

OK, but then what am I supposed to do when I get past 6?

Sorry to crap up your thread HPD. I don't really count days, but it's mostly because I'm too lazy to remember them. I don't have any problem with those who count.

Same here.. don't think there's anything wrong with those who count, I just can't be asked to do it myself.

I can only count to 3 so after that I lose count... :(

When i snowboard I can only count to 4 cause I wear mittens...
When i ski I wear gloves - so I can count to 10...

Maybe there is something to the whole skiers smarter then snowboarder thing...

So where do I fall in that? I wear mittens when I ski. :daffy: ;)

I seriously have no problem with anyone doing whatever makes him/her happy. Whatever floats your boat. :snow:

I count my days and try to write a trip report for each one. As pathetic as it sounds, I reread my TRs from time to time, especially in August, as it helps me relive each experience. This sort of goes back to [POST="201202"]my post[/POST] in the the "single best" thread. I like to have a days out goal to assure I log a lot of miles and if I don't count, I won't know if I reached it. For the guys that easily get 40 or 50+ days every season, counting is probably moot, but for a guy with two small children at home like me it's important to help me reach that modest 30 day season goal.

It's ironic, HPD, as all the reasons you cited (going when raining, sick, or to the local hill when not really feeling like it, etc.) for deciding not to count days anymore is precisely why I do it. I very rarely ever regret going skiing, and the days out goal sometimes gives me that little boost to go despite conditions not being ideal. I'm usually glad I did. If I ever start to regret days I went out, I should just hang 'em up for good because it means I lost a bit of my passion for it. I guess the only annoying thing about counting and using it as inspiration is in those instances when you simply can't go (sick kid, family obligation, work, etc.) as they might be more disappointing than they might be otherwise (especially if the conditions aren't ideal) because you didn't get a chance to add one to your total.

I never miss a trip report...from the past two seasons..I have 229 trip reports I can read back through..even when I'm at Jackson Hole..the first thing I do at the end of my ski day..usually in the bus..is tabulate my vertical(I put a checkmark next to each lift I ride) and then back at the hotel..right a trip report when it's fresh..

I tried the counting the vertical / runs thing for one season and it got rdiculous. I have since went back to counting number of days at which mountain. I think I'm always looking to expand my horizons. Another reason I think people count is to make sure their getting their money's worth out of their season pass. I do also try to beat the previous season if at all feasible...it's still quality over quantity though. And pretty much the only thing that spells bad quality around these parts for me is rain. Plus there's family obligations that will keep me off the mountain.

You might discuss your "counting" issue with a therapist. When taken to a certain level, it can definitely be a sign of OCD ( "Obsessive Compulsive Disorder").

I'm only OCD about skiing..I'm not about cleaning my apartment or germs or other things...well maybe a little bit about checking the internet constantly..lol..

I try to keep track of days so I know how much I'm getting my moneys worth for my passes. My memory sucks though and I don't document anything so I'm sure my totals are off a little. After the season I try to figure out which passes I would get the most value out of and days skied does figure into that among other things.

I don't suffer from OCD, I suffer from CRS. (Can't Remember Shit).

I get a count. It helps me make a choice on what pass to buy for the next year.

if I ski 70 days this year, each day costs 18 dollars a day

if I ski 50 days this year, each day costs 26 dollars a day.

We have many different pass options here.

1 day a week
2 day a week
restricted pass...
full pass....
etc.....

Now the way I do it is different. At the end of the year I go and have my pass scanned then get the total. No goal in mind at the on-set. Just a number to help me buy the correct pass (type) for the next season.

I usually am always around 70 days....makes the choice easy.

Can be even worse, when you can't remember if you've washed your hands 42 times.

I count everything. My watch keeps vertical and # runs. I enter them into a spreadsheet which can figure how much that run cost, and how much I pay per vertical foot.

In reality, I never remember these things, but it is fun to count them and be able to come up with the numbers, when I want. The looks on other people's faces. . . Priceless!

But I never say I have to ski this day because I need the days on my record, or that I don't want to ski this trail because it will take too long to get up the Castlerock chair, and cost me in the number of runs.

These are not things I care about. I ski every nice day. I ski where I want... providing I can. I enter the data, later.

Occasionally, I look at it.

I paid $536 for my season pass at Blue mountain...I expect 80-90 days there so my per day cost will be in the neighborhood of about $6-7...and I try to get at least 20k of vert in each session. It's about a gallon of gas each way so that's another $6 per outing. I spend the most money on my Jackson Hole trip, equipment, and trips to NY and VT.

But if I wasn't skiing everyday after work, I'd be hitting a local happy hour and I'd spend at least what I spend on a day of skiing on beer and food...not to mention gaining calories instead of burning them..sure I sometimes go to the bars after a night skiing session but not for as long because I'm tired and most importantly I have to write a trip report and add my vert and runs to the database on PASR...wow I need to ski so badly.

Skiing is definitely better than sex and I haven't counted the number of times I've had sex but I have counted the number of women I've made whoopie with..
