I just got back from Alta (and Snowbird). It's hard to put into words, but really, what a spectacular area. Anything from groomers to bowls, gullies, and chutes. What I liked the most was that everything is interspersed ... it's not "off-piste over there on the other side" but rather you can duck off almost everywhere (or via gate) alongside a trail and enter loose terrain, be it bowl or trees. Take a high traverse and drop down wherever you're comfortable. Ride that silken powder and even on a 50° sunny day it never gets sticky, just a little soft. TR coming soon, I'm a bit swamped after a week away from work...

I stared at Alta lovingly from the "Berlin Wall" at the top of Mineral Basin in Snowbird... there's a gate with a guard...

Alta was the first place I skied out west and really went nutz... 20 years ago....

'cause it rules.
Alta is about one thing and one thing only- Skiing and people dig that.

Alta is about me finally being able to snowboard there... someday...

You need to get on Taos this march. They are having a very good year, the entire place is skiing well. If you dig jackson you'll love taos-plus the vibe is very real.

If they ever do, there are a number of areas to avoid in there because you'll get stuck. Beautiful bowls but not a lot of grade at some of the runouts. We had to pole quite heartily out of Cecret Saddle and in the unpacked snow standing on a boot would have been impossible.

Hold on tight on the lifts, too ... no safety bars.

i know that many of those traverses can't be done on a board...
But as snowboarders and skiers begin to merge you may see some of those traverses change a bit...

I'd be on my splitdeck so I can skin out..

Probably headed to Taos next year... to show some love and get to finally ride those steeps!

I see boarders there all the time....before and after the ski season.

I'd consider it... Does Alta close before the Bird? Could use the Bird lifts for a headstart... :)
