Your boss being off should be MORE reason to head down

I wish it were the case, we are a department of two. They'd be really pissed if no one were there. The ironic part is that he is off because his brother in law died. He and his wife drove to North Carolina for the funeral. If it were me, I'd be like," I'm sorry about your brother, ummm, why don't you drive home, I'll be home in a couple days." Probably one reason I'm no longer married.

Looks like Timberline is where it is at. Matt and Pat have a few pics up on Harvey Road. A little closer than Snowshoe, decent pitch, not upside down, and less likely to get the boot vs a major resort. I think it would be worth it for the sheer adventure. How often do you get to ski WV in October on 3' of natural? Earning it all the way, way pay out the ass for airfare and lift tickets when you can have a unique and novel earned turn experience with some friends. It isn't out of your mind, it is simply a different way of looking at things than your perspective.

9 years ago today I was skiing Snowshoe when it was closed

We got a foot on Halloween. I didn't even have to earn my turns. We used our catering trucks to drive us back up to do laps. We did a few, but it's really quite flat in the bowl and not all that fun to ski when it's not groomed. Western Territory would've certainly been fun, but it requires more snow to ski. Maybe they had enough this storm to make those skiable.

Timberline is at least an hour closer and you definitely wouldn't catch flack for earning turns there. Timberline is the "free-heal" capitol of WV. It's right down the road from White Grass which is the prime BC destination in that area.

So, it's not like I'm making these comments without having knowledge of what the area offers. I could see spending 8 hours or so to scratch an early season itch, but 16??? I'll stick to my guns and say you're out of your mind. ;) How far did Matt and Pat travel for this?

MC2 is closer in NY. MadPat I think drove to meet MC2 and went from there. Probably about 11 hours for MadPat. But splitting gas and a cheap hotel, I'm sure they had a once in a lifetime adventure for under $100/pp counting all expenses. MC2 just posted a pic of skiing in the trees at TLine, nice.

I'm actively considering it. But I would prefer not to go solo. Not for safety... a trip like this definitely is about the experience and having some friends along is where it is at.

Well if I'd bought my skins this summer I'd say stop and pick me up on your way through...

My buddies got some at Snowshoe yesterday and their report wasn't all that glorious. the 3' was 15" and it was severely wind blow in places.

It sounds like there was more snow at Timberline. There is no power down there anywhere in the mountains. There is no way they will be able to open for business.

I have to think that with the winds associated with Sandy that the way the snow was deposited down in the WV mountains was something that we in the Northeast are quite used too. #1 - the amount that fell at the summit starts to dramatically taper off the further down you go - since elevation was apparently a bit of a factor with snowfall amounts #2 - the winds. Exposed areas probably ended up with not much more than a few inches of bullet proof grass, and in the lee of the wind where some of the snow ended up being deposited it was probably very dense, more like non stop crust from the ground on up. Face shots would be far more likely from one falling in it, than the snow getting washed up and over you on the way down.

That being said, for those that went after it, I'm sure it was (and will be) a bunch of fun and memorable!

Skiing in WV...questionable.

This thread was started during Hurricane Sandy when people were debating if Snoeshoe would open because of 3' of snow. It was the only place in the general on the east coast that could have a chance of opening.
