I would trade away the summer for any other season of the year. I have absolutely no use for the summer. Too hot, too humid, too muggy, etc. I would gladly have two falls or two springs even. Summer is useless in terms of the seasonal aspects.

Good for beer swillin' though, brotha! Heading to SoVT to cooler camp on 4th of July weekend. I'm hoping for hot and humid. I'll park my ass on a camping chair, and continually reach into some icy water in the cooler and pull out a can of ice cold shwag beer like Miller Lite or something. I'm normally a microbrew kind of guy, but sometimes ice cold swill on a hot day is perfect.

I lived in Montana from October of 2002 to April of 2004..the two ski seasons were great..the summer sucked..dry, dusty, and hot..yuck..mountains in the summer can't hold a candle to mountains in the winter..

You were in the wrong hills then. Its perfect in the high peaks!!

i'm with river. summer is pretty useless. sure i can lose golf balls, bike & hike but i'd rather be skiing. we've hit both new zealand & chile in the summer and there's nothing more fun than a pow day in august. if someone made me god, we'd have 7 months winter, 2 months spring, 2 months fall and 1 month summer.

I’ve seen several posts where the poster is already depressed that their ski season is over and can’t wait for next season. If you could trade away your summer for another winter would you do it?

I know I've made one though regarding my post-skidom depression. I do enjoy summers and though I can't wait for 2008-2009 ski season, I'm looking forward to summer as well.

I LOVE the ocean. A big wave day is almost as thrilling to me as a big powder day and equally as rare to experience here in New England. I love outdoor campout music festivals, I love dining out 'al fresca' at a nice Bistro with friends and I love grilling up a nice meal. Long warm days in general feel great.

It's really the shoulder seasons that bother me the most. I love mid June through mid September when the Ocean is warm. Well, warm is a relative term here in Maine as its always cold, but at least then it's warm enough to enjoy. Late May and early October are nice as well. The period from mid April to mid May and from mid October to mid November are the times when I'm bummed most.

So, I wouldn't give up a summer for endless winter, but I'd gladly trade the shoulder seasons to have a longer ski season with optimum conditions.

Agreed, normally a micro-brew guy myself. Actually 90% of the time, wine is my bev of choice. That said, summer time, I'm parked in a chair drinkin' a can of ice cold Miller Lite at the beach. Drink the beer, head into the water for some wave sets, back to the cooler...repeat. Maybe with the occasional tossing around of the Lacrosse Ball.

I would like a much shorter summer and a much longer winter. The only thing I do in the summer is go to the shore for a week in August and then wait for it to get cold again. I woke up this morning and put on the Weather Channel and it was 36 degrees, I was thinking I wish it would stay like that for a while longer, it will be hot and muggy soon. If the ski season was much longer the wife would probably be fed up with me not getting stuff done around the house though.

Here, Here, I totally agree. I love it either cold and snowy or Hot and sunny. Fall and Spring are working seasons for me - not much fun. Love the long warm days so would not trade summer for 2 winters. It's time to launch the boat and break out the fat skis for the water.

Love all the seasons. Couldn't give up summer for more skiing. I need a season to camp, sleep under the stars, sit around bonfires, kayak, swim, bike, BBQ. I dread the end of each season, but when its gone I dive into the next one. I live for the variety offered by the seasons!

I like the warmth, but...I would completely trade away summer (if it included fall too) for winter.

If it weren't for #9 there would be no Magic Hat. At the time of it's introduction, #9 was only supposed to be a seasonal summer beer. Magic Hat was also on the verge of going out of business. The beer was succesful and someone in marketing convinced the owners that they should leave #9 on the 'menu' year round. I took a tour of the facility in college and the owner said that that choice saved the company.

Summer is useless in terms of the seasonal aspects of what? It's weekends like this one that have me hating the spring and late fall. Both days have been raining and in the 40's /50's....just dreary and miserable. There are too many days like this this time of year and in late October and November. It's weekends like this that I find useless seasonally. Unless you enjoy hiking in the rain, but that in itself is usually a bad idea because of damage it does to trails.

I don't care for super hot in the summer, but when it is, I deal and have a blast in the ocean or back in Vermont a mountain stream with some nice rocks to dive off of.

I would much prefer pursuing outdoor activities on a day like today rather than 90 degree days with 100% humidity. I like LESS in July and August than any other month during the year and I am probably at my least active during these two months as well.

deadhead, you are counting the misses and ignoring the hits. Wasn't April THE FREAKING BOMB for outdoor activities? Just because we have a weekend that is rainy and 40s-50s does not mean that is representative of spring and fall. 100% is humitidity is very representative of summer so even when the temps dip down into the upper 70s and lower 80s, I am still pretty darn uncomfortable during the summer.

I guess I still consider the first few weeks of April as Winter. Last weekend, rain, this weekend, rain. Now that the ski season is over, well over for people are unwilling to earn turns, the only viable outdoor activity I see is kayaking, which I don't partake in.

I just find a solid month and a half every spring where I'm waiting for the ocean/lakes/streams to get warm and a solid month and a half in the fall when I'm waiting for the snow to start. I suppose if I were a hiker I'd consider the late spring and fall a great time of year. I'm not a hiker though. I'm into activities that involve water or snow. The times of year where neither are present to me is what I can't stand.

Realistically regarding the summer months, what are there, maybe 10-15 days all summer where it gets above the high 80's and near 100% humidity in Northern New England? Oppressive weather sucks, but there really isn't all that much of it and I'm someone who can't stand that kind of weather. For one thing, my complexion does not tolerate it. Unless I'm lathered in SPF 9000 I'm screwed.

As long as I'm near water that's swimmable, I'll take those oppressive summer days over a day like today where all I can do is sit inside and watch the rain fall.

I hear you regarding the water. After numerous rentals, we are finally planning on purchasing a pair of yaks this spring. Can't wait to get out there on the water when it is warmer. Even then, too warm can be a problem but I agree it needs to get warmer before the flat water boating season gets real nice. That said, I had some of my best days of the ski season in April and will be sad to see the month end.

I know this is just a difference in opinion and tolerance, but I find there is a solid one month stretch of extremely oppressive weather sometime during the months of July and August. 10-15 days in the 90s and 100% humidity sounds about right but that 100% humidity sucks even in the 80s. Heck, even in the upper 70s. The high dew points are more my issue than the high temps. I can handle dry heat pretty well but even a mild day with high dew points just slows me down and turns me off on doing outdoors stuff.
