We're quickly approaching that time when it gets cold enough for some resorts to "blow out the mice" and test their snowmaking systems. In addition to priming and testing the snowmaking systems, it's basically a marketing tactic/photo opp. Some folks scoff at it, but I still get excited as it's a sure sign the full time snowmaking/skiing season is right around the corner. You might recall that Killington didn't actually blow a patch last season. They effectively blew out the mice in the form of rain, not snow. Anyway, any bets on when or who might blow the first patch?

Woodbury.

seriously.

Now that I live 10 minutes from Woodbury I might have to give that little patch of man-made a try despite what I hear about the place. The urge to ski is really getting to me!

My wife grew up in Woodbury and everything you hear about Rod is true. But I agree, that's not a bad thing.

There have been times I've considered hitting Woodbury on day one, but even at only 30-40 minutes, I don't think it'll be worth it. If I only lived 10 minutes away, I might consider it. Some feel turns are turns...

Hey at least if it sucks you can go antique shopping along the way.

Not that my in-laws are the antiquing type, but they know many of the shop owners. The amazed by the number of antique shops in Woodbury the first time I drove to their house.

I don't think I will be there for Woodbury's opening day. But I will consider a few hours at mighty Woodbury before my first trip further North.

Next to "Powder Day", "Blowing out the mice" is my favorite ski phrase.

No idea who'll do it first, though.

It's gotta be Killington or Bretton Woods. Other places are better suited for it weather wise but both Bretton and Kmart pride themselves on their early season skiing.

*scoffs*

on a serious note, BW blew snow last year just for a photo op pre-bode fest which suggests to me that BW is serious about using snow making for promotional benefit. i wouldn't be surprised to see that BW blows.

That Photo on was a couple of different days Steve, If you check the archive pictures from that time on the site. These guys won me over last spring.

They made it more than once in April a few of us skied after one of those events. There was a small difference. Thaller1, Terry and myself were there. I think Thaller1 called it wierd snow. Really got warm quick and the snow never got a full cure.

The ticket sales people were pretty excited.... Said we only made it for a few hours last night. The window of low temps was small. They took great pride in it.

i wasn't hating on it, more power to them and it was great for them to go the extra mile just for the bode fest. the event probably would have been less successful without the extra snow and publicity that got more people there.
