Not according to SR media office as of today, they will reopen next weekend with better standings, but for now its T2 WROD not much else

they are making snow on the lower mountain, but it wont be skiable for some time

This decision of course resultant from your consultation. Don't open, bad idea, don't open

WROD don't interest me either, not only for the fast rocks and slow grass already mentioned, but for the out of control loonies in too small a space. Sorry, I like my knees. Maybe if I had a pair of definite rock skis, was already there, and it was midweek...

BEFORE I was married and had kids: 3 to 4 hours definate

Married, no kids: 2 to 3 hours

Now with kids (who aren't just yet ready ability wise for an opening weekend WROD): Not happening (hopefully back to that 3 to 4 hour range in another couple of years :) )
dream on man. Or at least I hope you are right. Soon you'll be hearing the great sucking sound of your kids activities consuming your every breathable moment! Unless you're ok with hiring a nanny...

Within:
15 Mins - anything
An hour - I'd go to a place that has a couple full trails open
2+ hours - at least half the mountain
3+ hours - 90% of the mountain

Unless of course you don't consider tomorrow afternoon to be "some time."

Dude, we all love the Loaf (Some of us have skied it for 30 years) and support your efforts to promote it, but lay off the biased uninformed crap or please do not consider your site to be one of information or one that "reports."

It was not a white ribbon of death today. Today it was a glorious blanket of irregular bumps with hardly another soul. I have had FAR worse days out on the mountain in the middle of winter with most trails open. All smiles for me today, 4 hour round trip drive WELL SPENT!

Early SR, that's awesome, I used to drive 3.5hrs (no kids) for the early season WROD at SR and some times it was great. Now, I wait for the snow in the woods. Midweek.

You guys are all girls...I didn't hesitate on the opening day with the 5 hour trip two years ago for Mount Snow or the 6 hour trip to Kmart last year. Another over 7hrs I'll stay for two days :)

This was my thought process in the approximately 2.7 seconds between when I learned Wednesday evening that SR would be open Thurs a.m. and my decision to make the 2:45 drive, even though skiing machine-made snow on limited terrain is pretty much the antithesis of the experience I go for these days:

  1. I have never skied in October, much less the middle of the month
  2. I was free to go Thursday. I wouldn't be Friday through Sunday.
  3. It'd be only the top of one trail but being a weekday, it likely wouldn't be crowded
  4. The idea of skiing amid nearly peak foliage was very intriguing
  5. Even if conditions were well short of optimal, I'd welcome the opportunity to start getting my ski legs back this early
  6. Boredom wouldn't be a problem because I'd only have a few hours to ski and at this stage I probably wouldn't have the stamina to go much longer than that anyway
  7. I'd been thinking about trying to get to SR on Halloween but who knows if the weather would cooperate; plus, that's a Saturday so a mob scene would be pretty much guaranteed
  8. $25 is reasonable
  9. Bragging rights, including possibly posting the first lift-served TR of the season on AZ. Oh yeah, and the sig

Absolutely no regrets. And while no this wasn't a powder or corn snow day, as Steve noted in his writeup from today, we weren't skiing a groomer!

I'm going to be in South Dartmouth, MA tomorrow at 5pm. At the moment, I'm planning to drive to Sunday River from there. That must be 4 1/2 hours.

I ended up wimping out. I didn't get out of there until 8pm and the guy I was going to crash with had wife ball & chain issues. She had an ACL graft on Tuesday so I guess I can understand his set of issues. After driving from Killington to South Dartmouth in the morning, I kind of lost motivation to start making phone calls at 8pm to find a place to crash.

I'm now getting unmotivated to bother skiing using my Colorado Pass at A-Basin on Friday. At the moment, I'm on a Friday morning flight back east so I can get home at a reasonable hour.

Better find new sources my man. Sunday River skied top to bottom this afternoon. Punch, while not edge to edge and only 10 feet wide in some places, skied better than T2.

If they allowed unloading at the midstation I seriously would've said screw T2 and just lapped Punch the whole afternoon.

I saw a couple people do that by accident even before Sunday Punch opened.
