Sugarbush conditions?

Fellas, relax. Its all good. conditions are good and I got a feeling they are going to get better.
steamboat-alls Im saying is, just because it wasnt windy at middlebury, doesnt mean anything for how wind is effecting the heavens gate lift at lincoln peak. Thats the truth.

I think you can handle it steamboat1. You've done plenty of name calling over the years on this site yourself.

Two people who were there chimed in and said the lift was windy. Are you calling them liars?

I can think of several examples of mountains that are equally as close as SnowB and SB and experience different wind patterns on the same day. Stowe and Bolton were two I already mentioned. Black and Wildcat. Black can be running it's lifts with no problems and have minimal winds and Wildcat's summit can be shut down with 80mph winds.

I get that SB has had it's problems this year, but maybe, just maybe this was a mother nature incident and not operator error like you seem to be alluding too.

Sunday it was mechanical which I know because I cut through the woods and skied down ripcord at about 8:30 and there were 5 snowmobiles there and lift mechanics working inside. At that point I dont think they realized that a wire had been torn from one of the lift towers (which kind of confirms the severity of the wind issues the day before).

I skied at Lincoln Peak today. Blue skies, temps in the mid teens, conditions are classic New England packed powder and there wasn't a lift line anywhere on the mountain. Castlerock / Cotillion and Middle Earth are both skiing really well since the groomer hit them last Saturday night topped with some new snow this week. Best snow of the day was surprisingly up top on Organgrinder.

By your own numbers, the top of Heaven's Gate is almost 50% higher than the summit of Middlebury. You don't think that elevation difference could affect winds?

I snowshoed to the top of North Lynx Saturday afternoon, the wind was so bad that I could not see to walk down the trail. This was fare deciding that it was too windy for XCODE skiing to be present at OLE's that day. So it was windy in the MRV, EVERYWHERE.

I did have another question since sick kid and ridiculous workload have derailed my plans for the weekend - how late into this season can I expect the connection between the two mountains to be open? We've always gotten up to Sugarbush late in the season and it is not open...so I've never skied Mt Ellen. Really wanted to do so this year. Ballpark, as I know Mother Nature affects all plans, how many weekends do I have left to do so?

Locals would know more, but I think Ellen was open until the first weekend in April last year. I recall being there the weekend before they closed it.

I believe that the permit for the frostbite express only extends till April 1st, and generally Mt Ellen closes with it. 90% of the time there is plenty of snow still on the mountain when it closes.

I was told Slidbrook cannot run if there is bare ground below it due to the fact that rescue vehicles cannot access it without snow due to the forest regulations.

That is also my understanding Dec 15 - April 1st but only with sufficient snow. The bus is generally easier when heading north (especially if you pick it up off of German Flats Rd).

i was at ellen yesterday and this^^^

groomed stuff was really nice, ungroomed/woods somewhat technical, but good base with some refreshments during the week...couple more inches and the place will be prime

Thats correct. Need snow to get snowmobiles in for an emergency. Depends on the weather.
