Tough call. Snow will start mid/late morning Sunday and just not stop until late Tuesday/early Weds. Winds from Northeast (oh, yea, that's why they call it a nor'easter...) Elevation will be a factor. I have emailed Roger Hill for a recommendation and will post here.

Thanks for the help. I have to work one day this weekend and as of now plan was to work tomorrow. Not sure if I can change that at this late stage, so hopefully a Sunday PM drive will be doable. I figure that once I get out of the mountains in VT it would be all rain, which while not pleasant driving, shouldn't be as bad as snow (of course it will still be snowing in the mountains--I'm not hoping for rain!!).

I hope so!

Hey, it can snow in the mountains or beginning Sunday PM and go forever.. But if my 5.5-6 hour drive is going to become 12 hours, I just can't do it. Even with 5.5-6 hours it's a tough call, since I just heard back from the last person I was waiting on and he (like everyone else) said no. So now it's just me planning to do 11-12 hours of driving in the span of 26 hours to ski 1 day.

I just took a look at the whether channel and it mentions NCP possibly Sat and Sun for the valley ... is there any chance this will be the case on the mountain?

Got it. Well I hope all NCP is in the valley and at points south so that everyone who is not driving home like Kcyank1 and myself can continue to rip it up out there.

Oh and I've been meaning to ask a random Sugarbush question (may have to post this elsewhere too):

For those of you familiar with the area, any suggestions on a good bar that will (in theory) have the Devils v. Lightning playoff game on on Satuday?

well, if we are driving 4.5 hrs up and 4.5+ (insert prayer here) back
in one day, just to ski 4 hrs, you can manage it!

Very true. I also have to pay for the car rental (nyc prices) so that's a factor. But I'm leaning toward just going for it. I haven't skied enough this year.

Below your avatar it says you are from Brooklyn -- I assume you are coming from some place else? No way you are doing 4.5 hours from Brooklyn. If you are somehow managing that, mind taking me? :) I'll pay for gas.

If you drive from K to SB it is an hour, but from NYC you stay on 89 longer and that is why it is only 30-35 minutes longer from NYC. Some prefer 87, but I also had a preference for the way I mentioned. I can't comment on another resort. I have to leave that to others!

Gore has been having a tough time. I used to make snow on Sugarbush North. Great hill. But I have to tell you. Whoever is comming from Jersey or the city you would be better served heading over to whiteface. While we have only had about 35 inches in the past week compared the other hills. The top is in great shape. The slides are not open but they are in great shape right now. It is the sickest skiing in the east in there.
whiteface is 2 hrs even from Albany. I have made it n 1:40 but you are risking tickets.

It clearly looks like this is going to be a big storm, but it is still a couple of days away and things can change dramatically in this amount of time. If I were betting I would say that anything after midday on Sunday could be challenging driving. It will probably be all rain South of Central Vermont and in the lower elevations from what we are looking at now and snow in the higher elevations of the Green Mountains of Vermont. Nor'Easters are always unpredictable, but this seems to be shaping up as a major storm beginning sometime up here Sunday afternoon. If you have the flexibility, I would come up today and get snowed in until Wednesday. If you can't do, that ski tomorrow and check the weather first thing Sunday am to see what time you should leave on Sunday.

I like Whiteface. It has runs with sustained pitch and lots of vert. But to me, without the Slides which are a pretty unique experience in the East (The Chin on Mansfield might be the closest comparison) and Empire, it just doesn't compare to Sugarbush. Perhaps it's because I only skied Whiteface once in truly great conditions (and the Slides were open), but if I'm going through the pain of renting a car and driving a long distance, I'd take SB over Whiteface. I guess I've also only been to Whiteface once where the glades were in good shape and skied the woods at SB a number of times, so that could matter. But based on what is open and the recent snow, I can't see going to Whiteface over Sugarbush.

Thanks for the honest update.. I'm leaning toward risking it and going. Whether I want to spend the money to rent the car alone is as much a factor this point as the driving. But unfortunately I don't have much flexibility at all. I have from Saturday night to Sunday night. Need to work tomorrow (Saturday) and Monday. I would consider pushing the trip to next weekend, but my work schedule is up in the air then too.

When heading to VT from NYC (or upstate NY for that matter), as anyone taken
the Taconic Parkway up to Albany to avoid the tolls on 87, and if so,
does that add a lot to the time, or is it equal?

I've taken the Taconic when coming from Rockland County and going to Lake George, and in that case it probably would add 30 minutes or so to the trip assuming normal Thruway traffic. Coming from NYC the Taconic is more accessible than from Rockland, so it probably wouldn't add quite as much. Would you go back to the Northway/87 after taking the Taconic up toward Albany (if so, get off in Chatam, I believe, rather than taking the Taconic all the way to I-90), or would you go over to I-91?

If the goal is to avoid tolls, are there any tolls on I-91/I-89?
