As much as you couldn't pay me to live in PA and not simply because of the lack of 'mountains', I must admit I'm kinda jealous of steeze. I'd love to have a 1100 vert area twenty miles away. Nearest thing I got is Shawnee, which probably isn't all that much better and it's over an hour.

That said, I'm happy I don't have to drive five hours plus to get to a big mountain.

I refuse to ski in PA. However, Blue Mountain is one I'll ski. For PA, it does have a decent amount of vert, trails, and decent conditions. A bit strange as the main lodge is on top. The closest I could think of in terms of size and character might be Belleayre. Although Belleayre is just a bit bigger, not much.

I'm two miles from an 1100 vert area and yes, it's great. And if I get bored with 1100 vertical feet, I can always take one of the lifts to the upper mountain, too. ;)

aside from being broke, I miss my days of ski town living. Stowe treated me well for a number of years and I'm sure I would've equally loved the MRV

perhaps someday I'll be fortunate enough to call such a place home again.

Plus nobody mentioned that they have a high speed quad and a high speed 6-pack..sure on busy days the trails become a clusterf@ck but most of the time I ski Blue it's pretty empty so it means..mad steezy vert..7-8 laps per hour..

I definitely miss my days being a Stowe passholder in college and a Bridger Bowl passholder/Big Sky frequency card holder during my Montucky days..but it's nice to have a home mountain so close to home.

When I was in Jackson Hole..a good percentage of the visitors just ski Jackson Hole for the week and that's it for their skiing for the year...kind of sucks..going 6 months with no skiing from May to November is enough..I couldn't imagine going 11.5 months..

Those types amaze me too. It's a regular vacation for them. Like me going to Cape Cod for a week. Swim, walk on the beach, eat lobster, sight see etc., it's all good then go home. Some think of skiing the same way.

Totally most of them don't even ski the whole week..they take entire days off to go shopping or go on a guided snowmobile tour where they have to go 35mph on a groomed trail. But here in PA..alot of the skiers don't think there's any skiing beyond Hunter and Killington..lol..let all the PA nubs go to Hunter and Killington..lol People at local bars talk about Outer Limits like it's S and S couloir..

I'll always have a soft spot for Blue mountain. Although my first ski day ever was at Big Boulder, Blue mountain is where I got into skiing with my middle school ski club. Blue mountain was founded about 30 years ago by Ray Tuthill..it was origionally named Little Gap due to the name of the gap in the Blue mountain range right near the Appalachian Trail. Ray was a skier and owned a Construction company and instead of laying off some of his workers in the winter..he employed them to build a ski area.

Over the years Blue mountain has expanded numerous times and is now considered a "major" Pennsylvania ski area and does over 200,000 skier visits per season. It's a true skiers mountain with a decent pitch for 800-900 vertical feet before a runout on the east side. They're open from 7:30AM to 10:00PM on the weekends and holidays and 8:30AM to 10:00PM weekdays. 100 percent of the trails are lit for snowmaking.

They have a large race program which gets exclusive use of the Razors Edge trail on Saturday and Sunday mornings and a few evenings a week as well. There is also Nastar on Thursday nights and Sunday mornings on raceway which can draw 40-50 skiers and riders. Blue is known throughout the area for their progressive terrain parks on Sidewinder and Come Around along with their skiercross course on lower Sidewinder and their halfpipe and mini-halfpipe. There are amateur contests for the parkrats most Tuesday nights and Sundays..along with a few boardercross/skiercross events and even bikercross where there is always tons of carnage.

There's no hotel, no condos, no ski-in ski-out housing, no restaurant, a tiny bar, and two cafeterias and a funnel cake stand. Often-times skiers and riders Grill up some...food in the parking lot and there can be a great tailgate scene on the weekends...The annual pondskimming event is also alot of fun. All in all it's not a bad place to have 18 miles from my apartment..Blue mountain the true mountain..

Been to Shawnee and Blue - Shawnee is way better, no questions asked. More challenging runs and more steeps than Blue. Blue does a great job with what they have though.

Me and my wife started at Shawnee, we only skied there a total of 2-4 days. About two year later we were driving through PA and I decided to go by Shawnee since we were in the area. We got out of the car, looked up and both immediatly cracked up. This was because we were so intimidated when we started there, looking at it afterwards was just that funny.
