I prefer the lodge.

1. I can get into my boots alright, but when it's really cold they need to warm up a bit before I can get my feet out.

2. Boot wear. Some boots have little rubber toe and heel pieces that make walking no big deal. Mine are hard plastic and I have some shims for balance on the bottom. I don't want to chew that stuff up on pavement/dirt.

Before we got a cubby at KSC, I used to boot up at home and drive to the base lodge. Figure 1 mile or less. But its really not that hard driving an automatic with ski boots on...

I always boot up at home and drive in ski boots. I have a slopeside season parking spot on weekends & holidays. Midweek, I can always park slopeside.

I'm a parking lot booter, park near the slopes at many resorts and you can ski back to the car avoiding the whole wet dog ambiance of the average ski lodge. Booting in the lodges means leaving stuff in the lodges for thieves to steal.

Booting in the lot frees up more 'possibilities' for parking too.

For some reason, driving with ski boots on makes me think of the movie Better Off Dead. One bone of contention Brian has with that movie is he thought it was impossible for Lane to drive off in the Camaro at the end with his ski boots on.

i boot up in the parking lot. don;t want to waste time futzing around in the lodge which is like a big time sink in the morning. once you are in the lodge, everyone uses the bathroom, buys breakfast, readjusts their 100 articles of clothing.....

plus I don;'t like getting a locker or leaving my stuff under a cafeteria table. so I am either cheap or paranoid or just like to be efficient. if I got to carry my shoes with me, I will put them in my backpack-I wear those half shoe/slip on types to the slopes.

+1 regarding Transpacks. Helps a ton.

I have never had an experience with having anything stolen at a ski lodge. I always felt like common sense about where you leave your stuff is enough. Maybe I am naive. Then again, I've always said, if someone wants my dirt sneakers and a snot covered extra gaiter, then that is a risk I am willing to take...

Let me get this stright- you change into your normal shoes in the middle of the day to drop a deuce?? Is that so you can play footsies with the guy next to you in the stall?

If you cannot appreciate how horrible it is to deuce in ski boots, then I question how human you are. And, for the record, I am mostly talking about deucing before I start skiing. If I boot up in the lodge and havent made my morning deposit yet, I get to do so in the comfort of my civilian shoes, which makes all the difference. I've only changed into shoes to deuce, in the middle of the day, maybe once or twice.

I don't see booting up at the car as uncomfortable..you can sit on the tailgate and it's not necassary to sit down to put on skiboots..
I've tried this. Does anyone else change their socks when they boot up? I drive in a regular pair, and then when I boot up, put on my super-low volume ski socks. I do not want any moisture at all in that boot, so I want a completely dry sock when I put it on. Changing socks in a parking lot is, at best, a balancing act. Sitting on a tailgate might work if you had the right kind of car, but for me, w a regular sedan, the height just aint right, and, worse, its usually covered with salt and dirt, so my ski pants get covered from my ass to the crook of my knee with nasty stuff. I guess some people have tolerance for that, but when there is a lodge a couple hundred yards away with comfortable, salt-and-dirt-free chairs, to me it is a no brainer. Plus then I have the bathroom at my disposal...perhaps i'm too regular for my own good.

the whole mountain is my bathroom..if I have to pee when I arrive at the ski area..I just duck into the woods my first run....
Hmm, you got me thinking...maybe its because I always ski with the gf too...she always has to pee before we start to ski, so we are going in the lodge no matter where we boot up. Skiing with girls or kids, maybe, is the most deciding factor...

I always boot up at home and drive in ski boots.

I've never tried this. On paper it sounds really dangerous...but I can't say I know that as fact.

Maybe I should try that sometime. I drive an automatic. It's only 25 minutes.

As for the socks, yes, I change mine when I get there. To add to that, when I did boot up at the car, I usually did it standing up. I drive a Chevy Blazer and I'm only 5'5". Sitting in the back is awkward and the passenger seat is too high. Good thing I can balance well on one leg. :D

i've always been and probably always will be a parking lot booter-upper. Pretty much the same reasons that GSS/Prisnah mentioned. Also, parking lots do no damage to snowboard boots. One more reason that ski boots suck!

This has got to be the silliest thing i have ever heard on one of these forums.
I mean seriously, you have changed into your normal shoes to drop a deuce? That is so funny. you may question how human i am, but i am wondering what kind of princess needs to change out of their ski boots to drop a deuce? I must be a superhuman cause i've dropped a deuce in the woods with my skiboots on once.

funny thing on the few European trips I have taken, they totally don;t seem to like you leaving your stuff in the lodge and they don;t like it when you brown bag your lunch. they want you to rent lockers at a couple of Euros a day which are usually sold out and if you leave your stuff around unattended, it might go missing.....on purpose.

not having your shoes in a foreign country.... sucks.

Most of the time, it's the lodge. The only place I boot in the car is Sundown where I usually get a somewhat close spot. If I'm planning to boot up at the car, I usually put my ski pants on at home and sometimes even my ski socks. Then I just toss the boots, my helmet with googles, gloves and pass tucked inside into the back of the car. Easier than repacking the Transpack every time.

If I am skiing alone I will boot up in my truck. I just climb in the body and sit on my tool box. After each snowstorm I am carefull to shovel it out so that it will be dry. If I am with my wife, we go in the lodge.

I actually keep my Transpack packed because we live in such a small apartment that it's become the home for my ski stuff. That way everything is always where I can find it and ready to go. :)

the lodge. much easier to boot up in a comfy lodge than at the car plus boots & feet have a chance to warm up a bit. use the facilitites. in general get myself combobulated. plus we bring a lunch so we come back to "basecamp" at lunchtime.

we'll boot up at the car at some western resorts with no day lodge type facilities. places like vail, beaver creek, steamboat etc.

also we do the car in the springtime when it's warm out. we'll bring the lounge chairs and hang at the car for lunch etc. usually during superstar season at k.
