Conditions for next week

I was wondering if anyone would make a guess on conditions for next week. I'm taking most of next week off and I plan on trying to get in a few day trips.

Will the ski areas have enough cold weather over the weekend to recover from today's NCP?

Or will we all be scraping down the mountain on hardpack? :x

Depends on where you are going to be skiing. I just looked at Wa-Wa's webcam and things looked thin. Crotched has grass on the outlying areas, but plenty of snow on the trail. I don't know what is happening up north. Pat's says that they will be 100 percent open on Sunday...I'll be there tomorrow morning (knock on wood) and will let you know how it is.

Forecast is calling for cold air tomorrow night and through Monday at least.

Just got back from 2 "spring-like" days at Killington. VERY moist snow....this morning rode from 8-11, - lots of wind hold lift, K1 wasnt running when I left parking lot around 11today (gondolas wearnt even on the cable). Very bad visability...riding in a fog/cloud. No lines as a result. Minimal lines yesterday too.

Yesterday was decent, warm, also spring like, outer shell not needed in the afternoon.

Natural trails are starting to show signs of fatague....woods I did hit (lo rider, nowhere/somewhere), seemed to be holding up yesterday. Lots of the goodness from this past weekend is gone.

But with all the moisture in the snow, once the temps drop tonight/tommorrow/sunday, I fear badness is inevitable....

I was going to stay up and hit S-Bush tommorow for the five dollar lift ticket, but since I dislike ice, figured would head back today.

Stay at Home

Unless it snows this week, you won't find very good conditions any where. Thursday saw fog and rain through out the Northeast all the way to Montreal. Friday's skiing at SB wasn't bad at all, but they lost a lot of snow. I don't know what you define Ice as, but as what they have gets scraped down to slick hardpack, the conditions will become much more difficult.

OK, Cannon took a bag (down to four runs now) and so did Burke (down to eight). But here in northern VT it is COLD and the snowmaking operations will be resuming. This is a BIG HOLIDAY period so, they are going to be pulling the stops! :wink:

Case in point: On my way home yesterday, I stopped at a smaller establishment (Pat's Peak) and they had at one time four groomers out there grooming, scraping, and pushing snow. During the late morning they had groomed runs that were soft and well covered--you would not have known that they had an inch of rain the day before! They even had people shoveling out the carpet and breaking up ice.

Jay did not look too bad. We did get an inch or so of snow here, but don't plan on natural snow skiing. :wink:

During that storm Friday when rain fell as far North as Montreal, didn't Jay see a lot of rain and fog? I don't want to think about what Canon will be like with so few trails and so many vacationers. The same goes for your heart throb.

cannon is back up to around 20 trails with all lifts except the tram open, which will help distribute people around the mountain. cannon is actually a great place to ski during vacation week, doesn't really get too crowded on vacations from my experiences. though i question how good the surface conditions could be after the rain and freeze despite the groomers best efforts.

Thanks. I would guess that Canon won't be that bad on their main trails, but they will be limited on the expert ones.

A foot of new fell at Jay overnight, and of course SE NH, eastern MA and ME are all picking up snow. At Jay, given the wind on the backside of this thing I'd stick to the woods -- they had ample base before the rain, which is now bomber, and the foot of genuine fluff ought to top things off nicely.

Stowe was dust on crust...5 inches of very light snow was not enough to cover up the ice.

Mount Washington Valley was one of the only areas to still have snow on the ground after last weeks NCP. That area also did very well from the recent coastal storm that walloped boston.

I drove thru VT after the NCP and there was no snow. MWV still had a 6 inch base at that time. Many areas got trail counts cut in half but Attitash for instance didn't lose a single one. Looks like they'll have 40 or more by midweek.

Snow

You're better off skiing X-C on Cape Cod or the South Shore this holiday week. It's a great way to condition for downhill and if you live in Mass or R.I., you don't have to travel a distance to do it. Myles Standish State Forest has some great trails, and it's huge. I'm amazed at how much snow there is in the woods here on the cape. Unfortunately, the driving is hazardous, but there is little need to drive when you can ski out the door. However, there's so much snow on my roof from Sunday night's storm, we already have a 5 foot icecle hanging from the overhang out this window. The local fox put his tracks down Monday night in my driveway, but the grouse is gone from the nearby thicket. Either it was flushed out by a fox or cyote or it fled for the beach. It's amazingly quiet out there with snow hanging from every bough and branch.
