I'll echo the congrats on the good news. I know I'm a cautious old coot but I'd suggest erroring on the cautious side. Basically, I'd suggest not skiing on it till you feel it's giving you strong lateral support without a brace.

so here's an update I decided to go ahead and get an MRI done on the knee that was on Wednesday. I braced up the knee and skied on it Wed night only did about 8 runs and if felt pretty good no significant pain. I skied all day yesterday at Stratton with the knee braced up and it felt good just minor pain the skiing was awsome. Here's the killer, I get a phone call this morning from my doctor regarding the results of the MRI. I got what is known as the "Terrible Triad" in the medical field. My ACL is completely torn, my MCL has a partial tear, and my medial meniscus is torn. Now i'm torn because I skied all day yesterday and it went well I work as a part time ski instructor and part of me wants to continue along skiing with the brace perhaps even getting a nicer custom brace and riding out the season I have a 3day trip planned to K-mart next month. The other part of me is saying hang it up for the season so I don't risk furhter injury. Either way, surgery is going to be required  I have an appt with the orthopedic surgeon next week i'm sure he'll say to stay away from physical activities until the knee gets repaired. This really sucks.

Wow sorry to here that subdude. Can you do more damage by skiing on it the rest of the year. For me a big question would be how long is rehab. If its a long time you might just want to go get it done and get ready for next year.

So sorry to hear about your injury. Speak to the orthopedist about whether or not to ski this year, but most likely he'll tell you to pack it in for the season. Your knee is destabilized and the risk of further injury (not just to your knee, but to the rest of you because of your knee's dysfunction) is significant.

Just get the surgery done ASAP and you'll be done with physical therapy and ready to hit the slopes by the time the snow guns start blowing in November.

Good luck.

That really sucks. As for continued skiing I know of people who ski without ACLs, but in general a lot of activity with a torn ACL tends to create other knee problems in the long run. I'd definately ask the orthopedic if you can do more damage skiing on it. My guess is that with a partially torn MCL and miniscus damage the answer is yes -- if so, get the surgery, do the PT and get well. It's so easy to tear an ACL in a backward-twisting fall on skis and as I recall that's what you described. The back of the ski combined with a stiff ski boot just holds a skier in a position that it wasn't designed when falling backward. Good luck and get well.

I blew my knee out on friday. I skinned up at sunrise and skiied National top to bottom, slashint the waiste deep drift the whole way down. Best run of the year. Then I went over to the Gondi and dopped into waterfall, the top ptich was great, the bottom pitch was to until I got back seated on my botom turn just before the exit back onto gondolier, and twisted off my feet, as I rotated I felt (and heard I think) the pop and a sharp pain inside my right knee. Took one more run, then as I shifted weight from my left to right foot just standing there, it blew again. I knew what I did immediately, I think I was just in denial. C'est la Vie. Go to the Doc tomorrow at 1:30, I think I just ended my seasn.

wow sorry to hear that, i'm in the same boat and i've decided to lay off the skis so I don't risk further injury. What I have is bad enough. This is my first injury to completely put me out of skiing in 20yrs and it sucks being half way through the season especially when you've got weekenders planned in March. Good luck with the knee JD.

Thanks. I go at 1 today, my knee is huge, even after ice, compression and elevation all weekend. I know alot of people who have come back from it obviously, but this may be the thing that get's me on a snowboard.

My knee isn't swollen like yours it's tender when I put pressure on the inside of the knee (MCL) and my knee also knocks and clicks all the time that's a sign of torn meniscus. In regards to snowboarding, it's alot less stressful on the knees, yet I see alot more shoulder injuries associated with boarding then with skiing. I've come to the conclusion that my season is over  , having surgery if required, and rehabbing the hell out of it so by next season i'll be ready.
