We all are who we are and all that, but here’s my take for ski forums.

Get Alongs - are usually very optimistic and good-natured. When someone writes something about a ski area they know they’ll chime right in with an upbeat reply. Conversely when things get negative they’ll stay out all together or try to change the momentum of the thread in a positive direction.

Pot Stirrers - are usually aggressive and very opinionated in what they think they know and they can’t wait to let the forum know what they think they know. They also seem to take pride in the notoriety they receive being a pot stirrer.

In real life I’d rather ski, drink, etc. with a Get Along. I really don’t like associating with Pot Stirrers. That said I need them here. Even though they piss me off with their crazy talk and not keeping it real (ex. Iceface, etc.) I need them. They keep me sharp and thinking. When everyone writes happy threads it can get mind numbing.

BTW – Jimmy G’s nickname is pot stirrer, but he really isn’t one he just likes to debate issues in a balanced way, so this post is not about him. I’ve met and skied with him twice and I think he’s a good dude. He can talk a blue streak though that’s for sure.

I don't think this is always the case. I think there are some that have an online "persona" that is probably far different than how they are in person, or at least I hope so in some cases. :smash: I prefer to keep it real especially since I've met so many AZers. My optimism and enthusiasm is not a front and I am one that subscribes to the "bad day of skiing is better than..." philosophy. I've been criticized for looking at things through rose-colored glasses and that's fine by me. Usually that's pointed out by the condescending know-it-alls who I'll never likely meet or choose to hang with anyway so I really couldn't care less. Life is far too short for whining.

There are waaay too many other boards and sites where folks go ballistic and over the top, like Yahoo. It's a nice refuge when we can find a board where there's some humor, wit, insight and generally positive commentary. Nothing wrong with instructive/constructive debate, but I'll take fun and humor over pissing matches. I never saw much point in attacking anyone if I haven't met them yet and there may be a time in the future that I'll ski with them. By far the smartest board policy is to keep politics out, its a sad commentary about our politics, but its necessary censorship. There's plenty of political flame boards to vent on. I dig harmony :)

agree with Mou on the politics front. for whatever reason, my interest in discussing politics has dwindled to near nothing in the past four years. perhaps its the AZ influence. still got my beliefs, but feel very little need to stump about them on a message board.

the absence of political discussion, well except for Kmart  is rather refreshing

Right on. Politics is an interesting topic. I think many engage in such discussions with the intent of "enlightening" others or convincing them to change their view. Most times, that doesn't happen and then hostility ensues. It's almost always a circular debate.

But...HPD, you are a pot stirrer, no? :???::wink:

Maybe, but I never really start up with anyone. If someone starts with me I defend my turf. Then when it’s over it’s over.

I like threads like this cause they can lead to interesting discussions.

Yesterday I started two roll call threads, a ski sticker and a season pass just cause I thought the forum was kinda slow. People like to respond to roll calls, but can you tell me anyone’s sticker or season pass if you didn’t already know it?

That said on here I guess I am what you perceive me to be. I’ve kinda perceived you as a GSS want-to-be. Although why anyone would want to be like him is beyond me.;-)

If we were merely a nation of get alongers, we'd still be flying the Union Jack on public buildings.

In general I'm a pretty easy going guy...but I do like to play devil's advocate. The most fun I've had on this site was the debate we had last spring/summer over the ASC type discount pass approach vs the premium pass pricing approach...really enjoyed the banter with JimG. As someone said, the debate helps keep you sharp.
